David Coote played local Sunday morning football for the team his uncle managed and ended up as their club Assistant Referee aged 12! Local referees persuaded him to take the course when he reached 14.
From the Newark Alliance he was promoted on to the Notts Alliance list and the Unibond assistant referees’ list, and spent three years at that level.
In 2004 he was promoted again on to the referees’ list for the Northern Counties League, and in August 2006 was promoted to the Football League assistant referees’ list His first game as a National List Assistant Referee at Stockport County v Hereford, later joining the Premier League assistant referees’ list.
In 2007/08 saw him promoted to Conference as a Referee and covered his first football league match in the same season as Bradford beat Morecambe 1-0 on 5 April 2008. The 2010/11 season saw David Coote join the Football League as a referee.
His first Championship match was at Deepdale in the 1-1 draw against Leicester and took charge of the League One Play Off Final on 25 May 2014 which Rotherham beat Leyton Orient 4-3 penalties after a 2-2 draw.This was his last Millers game
His two matches this season and both finished 2-2, the last was at Turf Moor with Birmingham visiting Burnley on 15 August

His assistants are William Smallwood from Cheshire and Wayne Gunnill from East Yorkshire. The fourth official Richard Clark from Northumberland whose last match as a referee involving the Lilywhites was a 2-2 draw at Port Vale on 17 April 2015 whith the home side having Richard Duff sent off.
