In 2007/08 saw him promoted to Conference as a Referee and covered his first football league match in the same season as Bradford beat Morecambe 1-0 on 5 April 2008. The 2010/11 season saw David Coote join the Football League as a referee.
His first Championship match was at Deepdale in the 1-1 draw against Leicester and took charge of the League One Play Off Final on 25 May 2014 which Rotherham beat Leyton Orient 4-3 penalties after a 2-2 draw.
His previous Gills match was a 2-1 win at Bristol City on 14 August 2012.
His last match was a 4-3 home victory for Wolves against Leeds on 6 April..
