Simon Hooper had been at Swindon Town for seven years before being released at the age of 16, he later played for Highworth Town and Swindon Supermarine.
He was a referee in the Hellenic League, Southern League and the Blue Square Premier. He became an assistant referee in the Football League in 2006 before breaking his leg in a five a side match in December which was undiagnosed for three weeks when it was thought to be a calf strain.
In 2008 he took charge of the Conference League Cup Final when Aldershot beat Rushden 4-3 on penalties after a 3-3 draw.
He joined the National list of referees for the start of the 2008/09 season and made his debut in the Football League in a 1-0 win for Shrewsbury at Exeter on 16 August 2008.
His previous match was Birmingham’s 1-0 win at home to Leeds on 20 April 2013. His last Crawley match was a 2-0 home win over MK Dons on 23 October 2012
