Mark Heywood started as a football league referee at the start of the 2011/12 season after spending the previous two seasons as referee’s assistant.
His first match as a referee was a 2-1 win for Aldershot at Bradford on 6 August 2011. His last match was a 4-0 home win for Sheffield United against Scunthorpe on 24 March 2015. The Irons were reduced to 10 men this was the third match on the trot that Mark Heywood had sent a player off and four red cards in the last seven matches. His last Bradford match as a 2-0 defeat at Barnet on 5 January 2013.
