Paul Tierney was promoted to the select group of assistant referees in 2008 and in the same year was appointed as an assistant referee for a Football League Play Off Semi-Final between Rochdale and Darlingtonand a UEFA Cup tie.
He was appointed as a referee in 2009/10 and in his first match took charge of Notts.Co 4-0 win at Macclesfield on 15 August 2009.
His last match also saw another large away victory when Gillingham won 6-1 at Herefordon 17 September 2011. It will be his first match as a referee for both Preston and Tranmere.
