Jon Moss started refereeing in 1988, after progressing through the Northern Counties East League and Northern Premier League. He was promoted to the National Group of assistant referees in 2003 and to the National List of Referees in 2005. He was the referee at the Conference Play Off Final between Carlisle and Stevenage in 2005 and an England U-19 friendly game.

His first league match was a 1-0 win for Rochdale at Shrewsbury on 6 August 2005, later that season the first Championship game Jon Moss officiated was at Deepdale.

He became a regular official in the Football League and was appointed to a Premier League contest in December 2010 between Wigan and Aston Villa; however it was postponed due to heavy snow. He was later appointed to Birmingham visit to Blackpool in January 2011 which Birmingham won 2–1.

It was announced on 20 June 2011 that he had been promoted to the list of Select Group Referees who officiate all Premier League matches. He joined the Select Group for the 2011/12 season alongside fellow newly promoted Preston referee Neil Swarbrick.

His last game involving Nottingham Forest was a 1-1 home draw against Watford on 11 February 2012

His last match was a 2-0 victory for Arsenal at home to Crystal Palace on 2 February.
