Mike Dean began refereeing in 1985. He became a Football League assistant referee in 1995 before progressing to the full referees' list in 1997. His first League game to take charge was a 3-2 victory for Barnet at Rotherham on 9 August 1997. He was appointed to the Select Group of referees for the Premier League in 2000 with his first top tier match being a 1-0 win for Leicester at home to Southampton. In 2003 he was subsequently promoted to the FIFA list in 2003 and was the fourth official for the FA Cup Final as Arsenal beat Southampton 1-0.
In 2004, he was appointed to the International Friendly as the Republic of Ireland beat Holland 1-0 in Amsterdam. In the same year, he took control of the FA Community Shield match as Arsenal beat Manchester United and the FA Trophy Final as Hendersford won 3-2 against CanveyIsland.
He was originally appointed to referee the 2006 FA Cup but was replaced with Alan Wiley after concerns were raised about his ability to be impartial towards Liverpool due to being based close by in the Wirral. Eight days later he did make it to the Millennium Stadium via the Championship Play Off Final as Watford beat Leeds 3-0, although he finally refereed an FA Cup Final in 2008 as Portsmouth beat Cardiff 1-0.
He has also officiated European Championship qualifying matches. His first appointment was to the Euro 2008 group F qualifier between Iceland and Latvia on 13 October 2007. He stepped down from the FIFA international list at the end of the 2012/13 season at the mandatory retirement age of 45.
On 5 April 2009 in a South Wales derby between Cardiff and Swansea, he suffered a cut to the forehead resulting from what appeared to be a coin thrown by a Cardiff supporter.
On 31 January 2011, Dean was appointed to referee the 2011 League Cup final between Arsenal and Birmingham. Birmingham won the match 2-1, with an 89th-minute winning goal by Obafemi Martins.
His last Forest match was a 3-2 home defeat to Leicester on 4 May 2013; his previous game was Leicester’s 1-0 win at Leeds on 18 January 2014.
