Gavin Ward started refereeing at the age of thirteen in Kent and progressed through the Kent and Isthmian Leagues. He spent five seasons as a National List, Select Group and FIFA assistant referee. For the 2007 Carling Cup Final he was the first match official to be appointed as ‘reserve assistant’ in a major domestic Cup Final.

From the 2007/08 season Gavin Ward was promoted to the referees National List and his first match saw him produce a red card after just 19 minutes when Barnet’s defender Devera was sent off in their 2-1 home defeat to Hereford on 18 August 2007.

His last Brentford match saw both sides reduced to ten men in the first half as the Bees won 3-1 at Colchester on Boxing Day 2012. Tom Adeyemi was the Brenford player who was sent-off.

His last match was a 4-1 win for Brighton at home to Huddersfield on 2 March 2013.

In all the football league referees Gavin Ward has produced the most red cards this season.
