Mark Heywood started as a football league referee at the start of the 2011/12 season after spending the previous two seasons as referee’s assistant.
His first match as a referee was a 2-1 win for Aldershot at Bradford on 6 August 2011. Five of this seven red cards came in his last six matches of the 2014/15 season, including the Lilywhites match at Bradford.
