Danny McDermid started refereeing in 1991 in Northern Ireland before spending time in North Yorkshire. He joined the National List of assistant referees in 2002, and was promoted to the referees’ list in 2006. His first league match was a 4-1 win for Peterborough against Bristol Rovers on 5 August 2006.

In a week where swearing as come to the forefront he was charged by the Football Association after he was alleged to have sworn at Leeds manager Dennis Wise after a stormy match between Leeds and Gillingham on 29 September 2007. He denied the charge and after a personal hearing the FA's disciplinary committee found the match official not guilty.

His last match on 27 March saw nine man Burton lose 3-0 at Oxford. This will be his second Pompey match on the trot as he was the fourth official in the 2-0 defeat at Reading on 2 April whilst his last Pompey game as a referee was earlier in the season with a 3-2 home win over Watford on 16 October 2010. This will be his first Lilywhites match as a referee, although he was the fourth official in the 2-2 draw at Watford on 15 February..
