Dave Phillips started Refereeing in 1981 whilst still playing in his local area and after breaking his leg twice, in eight months, in the same place in 1987 he started concentrating on refereeing.

He progressed through West Sussex League, Sussex County League, Southern League, then in 2003 a double promotion onto the Panel League as Referee and Football League as Assistant Referee. He was the referee in the 2008 Youth Cup Final between Chelsea and Manchester City and for the start of the 2008/09 season he was promoted to The National List of Referees.

His first match was a 4-0 win for Brentford over Grimsby on 16 August 2008. His last game was a 3-1 win for Crewe at Gillingham on 13 November. This match saw the home team reduced to ten men when Davies was sent off after 26 minutes.

This will be the first time he has taken charge of a Lilywhite game but was the referee on Boxing Day 2009 when Q.P.R. beat Bristol City 2-1.
