Carl Boyeson started refereeing on the Hull Sunday League in 1992, after taking up the whistle, at 22, on the suggestion of his friend and work colleague, Wally Jude. He was promoted via the Unibond League to the National List of assistant referees in 1996 then to the select Group of assistant referees in 2000. He then joined the National List of referees in 2002. He has refereed two semi finals of the FA Vase and was 4th Official for the FA Youth Cup Final in 2000.

During the day Carl Boyeson can be found fixing leaking radiators, he is a heating engineer

His first league game was on 18 August 2002 when Bury beat Swansea 3-2 with Steve Watkin of the Swans receiving a red card. His first Championship game was the Ipswich v PNE match later in that season.

His last match saw a 1-1 draw between Oldham & Crewe on 21 September.

His last Peterborough match was a 2-0 win at Barnsley on 2 October 2012. Dean Mohareb was due to referee this Championship match but was stood down after his arrest on suspicion of hacking the accounts of a colleague at the Football Association.
