Tony Bates has been a qualified referee since 1983 and after progressing via the West Midlands League, Points League and the Vauxhall Conference he joined the National List assistant referee in 1993. In 1996 he became a FIFA assistant referee and was also appointed to Euro 1996 and an assistant between Germany and the Czech Republic match at Old Trafford. Having also joined the National List of Referees in 1996 Tony Bates is now one of the longest serving in the football league. He was an Assistant Referee at the Charity Shield in 1995 and also in the FA Cup Final of 1996. He also refereed the FA Women’s Cup Final in 2007.

 

In February 2010 he collided with Coventry’s Sammy Clingan in a match against Nottingham Forest and had to leave the field on 70 minutes with a calf injury. His assistant Amy Fearn became the first women to referee a Championship match.

 

His last match was Sheffield Wednesday’s 1-0 home win over Crystal Palace on 23 February.

 

His last MK Dons match was a 4-3 home win over Blackpool on 24 August 2010.
