Mike Russell stared referring in the 1990’s and progressed via the South Midlands League.

He joined the National List of assistant referees in 2000 before being promoted to the referees List in 2004 with his first match being a 3-1 win for Scunthorpe at home to Rochdale on 7 August 2004.

He is also a licensed FA coach.

His last game was Chesterfield’s 2-0 homw win over Bristol Rovers on 9 March..

His previous Notts County match was a 2-1 home defeat to Rochdale on 5 April 2011

Simon Grayson will remember the referee from December when he showed Wednesday’s Jeremy Helan two yellow cards inside the opening 25 minutes of the goalless derby at Huddersfield but failed to send him off.

He booked the on-loan Manchester City winger Helan for the second time in the 25th minute after his foul on Adam Hammill. He had previously carded him for diving, but mistakenly noted the name of Owls teammate Michail Antonio.

The official ignored protests by the then Huddersfield boss Simon Grayson and his players and restarted the match, meaning the chance to red card Helan had gone.
