Paul Tierney was promoted to the select group of assistant referees in 2008 and in the same year was appointed as an assistant referee for a Football League Play Off Semi-Final between Rochdale and Darlington and a UEFA Cup tie.
He was appointed as a referee in 2009/10 and in his first match took charge of Notts.Co 4-0 win at Macclesfield on 15 August 2009.
His previous match on 2 October as Tranmere won 3-1 at Scunthorpe. Prior to the Preston match his last Oldham match was a 2-0 home defeat to Bury on 5 November 2011 with fireworks on the pitch as Oldham’s goalkeeper Alex Cisak was sent off after 10 minutes whilst Bury were reduced to ten men on 90 minutes,
