He was still an apprentice and was the youngest player to appear for the club. This was the final match of the 1980/81 season with Wimbledon finishing fourth and gained promotion to Division Three.

The following season saw Wimbledon relegated back to Division Four on goal difference as Gage scored once in 21 appearances.

The 1982/83 season saw Wimbledon as champions of Division Four with 98 points with Gage scoring 4 goals from 26 appearances. Wimbledon was also promoted the following season as runners-up to Oxford as Gage scored 4 times again from 24 matches.

The 1985/86 season saw Wimbledon promoted to Division One as Gage scored once from 29 matches. Their first season in the top division saw Gage make 25 league appearances; scoring three goals as Wimbledon finish sixth.

After 15 goals from 168 appearances Gage joined Aston Villa for a fee of £100,000 in the summer of 1987.

Gage made his Villa debut in a 1-1 draw at Ipswich on 15 August 1987 and was an ever present during the 1987/88 season scoring twice as Villa were runners-up to Millwall and promoted to Division One. He scored 6 goals from 71 appearances in the next two seasons before joining Sheffield United for £150,000 on 15 November 1991. Gage had scored 8 goals from 115 appearances for Villa.

In September 1997 he joined his former Wimbledon colleague Glyn Hodges at Hull and made his debut in the 2-1 defeat at Rochdale.
