Andrew (Andy) McLaren was born in Larkhall on 24 January 1922 and played as an Inside Forward. He began his career with Larkhall Academy and Larkhall Thistle before joining Preston in February 1939.

He had to wait until 1946 to make a league appearance but was a prolific goalscorer for Preston in the War Cup of 1940/41 when he scored five in a 12-1 win against Tranmere and all six in a 6-1 win against Liverpool.

Following time in the forces he made his Preston debut in a 3-0 victory at Leeds on 28 December 1946. His first league goal in his third appearance and on his home debut as Preston beat Grimsby 3-0 on 4 January 1947. During this season he scored 5 goals from 14 appearances.

The 1947/48 season saw McLaren the top goalscorer with 17 goals from 41 appearances incuding two braces in December in a 7-4 win against Derby and a 3-2 win against Burnley.

The 1948/49 season saw McLaren score another brace at Newcastle in a 5-2 victory.

His last appearance was in a 6-1 home defeat to Manchester United on 30 October 1948 and was later transferred to Burnley in exchange for Jack Knight in December 1948. For Preston McLaren had netted 29 goals from 69 appearances.

His stay at Turf Moor was a short one and was transferred to Sheffield United three months later after scoring one goal from three appearances.

His one goal from eleven appearances could not help the Blades avoid relegation from Division One; the other team relegated was Preston. McLaren made the same number of appearances & goals in 1949/50 which saw the Blades just missing promotion on goal difference to their local rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

In February 1951 McLaren joined Third Division North side Barrow and had netted 4 goals from 31 appearances for Sheffield United.

McLaren scored 8 times from 17 appearances for the remainder of the season and 10 goals from 35 appearances in 1951/52 season. For the next two season McLaren only missed four matches scoring 11 goals in 1952/53 and was top goal scorer with 20 goals in 1953/54. After 52 goals from 155 league appearances he joined Bradford Park Avenue in October 1954.

He just stayed for one season scoring 7 goals from 18 appearances before joining Southport in June 1955. His stay on the coast was even shorter as six months later with one goal from four appearances he moved to Rochdale. McLaren made 44 appearances and scored 12 goals before joining Fleetwood after two seasons with Rochdale.

McLaren made 4 appearances for Scotland with 3 of these whilst at Preston, scoring on his debut in a 1-1 draw against England at Wembley after just 11 appearances for Preston. McLaren passed away in 1996.
