Player Profile JEFF WEALANDS
Jeffrey Andrew Wealands was born in Darlington on 26 August 1951. Wealands started his career at Darlington Cleveland Bridge FC before joining Wolves as an apprentice. Although he signed a professionally in October 1968 he never made a league appearance for the club.
Wealands joined his home town club in July 1970. He didn't make any appearances in his first season but made 28 for the Fourth Division side in the 1971/72 season.
In March 1972 Wealands joined Hull for a fee of £10,000 and stayed for over seven years. After making three appearances in 1971/72 and 21 appearances in 1972/73 he became a permanent fixture in the green shirt as Wealands only missed three matches in the next two seasons. Wealands was an ever-present in the seasons 1975/76 and 1976/77. He was limited to just 23 appearances in the 1977/78 season as Hull finished bottom and relegated to the Third Division. He took his tally for Hull to 240 league appearances before joining Birmingham in July 1979 for a fee of £30,000.
Wealands made his debut for Birmingham in the 2-0 defeat at Sunderland on 22 August 1979 and in total made 40 League appearances and kept 16 clean sheets as Birmingham got promoted to the top tier after finished third above Chelsea on goal difference.
In his first season in the First Division in 1980/81 saw Wealands made 39 appearances. Wealands made the last of his 102 league appearances for Birmingham in the 1981/82 season.
In February Wealands joined Manchester United on loan initially as cover for Gary Bailey. He made the first of his five games whilst on loan on 2 April 1983 in a 3-0 win at Coventry.
Wealands signed permanently for United in August 1983 and made a further two appearances in the 1983/84 season to take his tally to seven. During this season, in March 1984 Wealands joined Second Division Oldham on loan and made ten appearances.
The following season Wealands joined Third Division Preston on loan for a month. Initially the green jersey had been held by Peter Litchfield until the home defeat to Telford in the FA Cup. He following two matches saw Glen Campbell in goal as Preston was fourth from bottom. Wealands made his debut for Preston on Boxing Day 1983 as PNE lost 2-1 at Walsall. His second game also ended in defeat as Wigan won 2-0. His final two games for Preston at the start of 1984 ended in draws. A 1-1 draw at home to Newport, before a 2-2 draw at Deepdale against Bristol Rovers on 12 January. Alan Kelly was replaced as manager the following month but couldn't help Preston avoid relegation to the Fourth Division for the first time as they finished second bottom.
Wealands brought a wealth of league experience to Moss Lane when he joined Altrincham in May 1985. He also continued a trend of the club signing ex-Manchester United keepers, following on from Alex Stepney and John Connaughton. Wealands was in goal when Altrincham knocked Birmingham out of the FA Cup on 14 January 1986 when the Blues were defeated 2-1 at St. Andrews , the goalkeeper in goal for the Blues that match was a young David Seaman. Also 1986 he helped Altrincham win the FA Trophy Final at Wembley for the first time since 1978 as they defeated Runcorn 1-0.
The following season Wealands was a Cheshire Senior Cup finalist. He left at the end of the 1986/87 season and joined Barrow before rejoining the 'Robins' during the 1988/89 campaign. He was the 'bedrock' of the side that came so close to winning the Conference during the 1990/91 season, a side that went 28 games without defeat, with Wealands keeping 19 clean sheets in 55 appearances that season. Wealands came out of retirement twice the following season to help Altrincham out but, at 42, he called it a day to concentrate on his property development company He had made 202 league appearances for Altrincham.
He also briefly joined the board at Altrincham following the end his playing career. He still keeps involved in football by helping to coach the goalkeepers at Bury.
