On 26 February 2000, after joining Port Vale on loan he made his league debut in a 1-1 draw at home to Stockport. His first league goal came in his second match in a 3-1 defeat against his current club Fulham. Healey scored 3 goals in 16 appearances for Port Vale.
Healy made his second League Cup appearance the following season in a 2-1 defeat at Sunderland. His only league appearance for United was on 23 December 2000 in a 2-0 home win against Ipswich.
The following week after signing for a club record fee of £1.5m Healey made his Preston debut in a 3-2 defeat at Sheffield United with Healy scoring his first PNE goal after 4 minutes and a total of 5 goals in the first 7 league games. Prior to joining Preston, Norwich had also tabled a bid for Healy but was rejected by United and the Canaries signed his United teammate Alex Notman instead.
Healy scored 10 goals for Preston during the 2000/01 season including the Second Leg Play Off match against Birmingham . Healy played against Bolton in the final but it ended in disappointment as PNE lost 3-0.
The 2001/02 season saw Healy score his first league hat-trick as Stockport were beaten 6-0 at Deepdale on 3 November 2001.
Again Healey was second top scorer for Preston with 10 goals.
With Preston signing Jamaican Ricardo Fuller to partner Richard Cresswell, Healy just made 24 appearances for PNE during the 2002/03 season, half of these as a substitute and scored five goals. Two of the goals were scored in a 4-3 home win against Stoke on 24 August.
With opportunities limited at Preston, Healy was signed by Nigel Worthington at Norwich, who had only scored 6 times in their previous 9 league matches. He made his debut against Stoke on 1 February 2003 and scored his first goal for Norwich the following week in the 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday, Norwich made a bid to sign him on 24 February although Preston boss Craig Brown was adamant that Healy was returning to Deepdale.
Although he did return to Preston following the Ipswich match on 2 March, Norwich and Preston arranged another loan deal on 13 March that would bring Healy back to Carrow Road until the end of the 2002/03 season. He then returned to Deepdale. In total Healy made 13 appearances for the Canaries.
The 2003/04 season saw Healy again finish second in the goal scoring charts for Preston with 15 goals, 2 league goals behind Fuller. Only once during that season did he score more than 1 goal in a match when he scored a brace in the 2-1 home victory against Reading on 2 March 2004.
Healy was due to be out of contract in the summer of 2005 and had turned down a new deal. Leeds had initially bid £100,000 for Healy, before increasing to £200,000. A later bid of £600,000 was also rejected. Bur his last appearance for Preston turned out to be the 2-0 League Cup defeat at Everton on 27 October as after a drawn out saga Preston accepted Leeds offer of £650,000 two days later. Healy had made 139 league appearances for the Lilywhites, scoring 44 goals.

On 13 July 2007, Healy joined his old Northern Ireland Manager Lawrie Sanchez at Fulham. He scored in 50 seconds of his league debut for Fulham following a mistake by Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, although Arsenal recovered to score twice in the last 6 minutes to win the match 2-1. Since then Healy has only scored twice in 22 appearances with Fulham in a relegation battle with only winning twice in the 2007/08 Premiership campaign so far and Roy Hodgson replacing Sanchez as manager just before the new year.

His competitive international debut came in September 2000, in a World Cup qualifying game against Malta, and he scored his first competitive goal for his country a month later against Denmark.
Healy had averaged a goal every other game for the Under 21s, then banged in three in his first two games for the senior side.
After a bright start to his senior career (six goals in ten games) Healy suffered, along with everyone else as Northern Ireland didn't score for 2 years and in a 1,298 minute spell until he scored in Norway in Sanchez's first game in charge.
On 6 June 2004, in a friendly game away to Trinidad and Tobago, he scored brace for Northern Ireland, thus equaling and overtaking Colin Clarke's record of 13 goals for the country. It was his 35th international.
On 7 September 2005, at Windsor Park, Healy secured a famous victory for his country against England when he scored the only goal of the game.

On 6 September 2006, Healy became the first man since Colin Clarke to score a hat-trick for Northern Ireland and the first since George Best to do so in Belfast. His three goals gave Northern Ireland a historic 3-2 victory over Spain.
Healy followed this feat with the winner against Latvia on 11 October 2006. In the following international game, against Liechtenstein, he scored a second hat-trick; this made him the first player ever to score two hat-tricks for Northern Ireland .
He scored both of Northern Ireland's goals in a 2-1 win against Sweden on 28 March 2007, and two more against Liechtenstein on 22 August, followed by a penalty away to Iceland on 12 September. On 17 November 2007, when he scored against Denmark, it was his 13th goal in the UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying Group F tournament (in 11 games). This made him the highest-ever goalscorer in a UEFA European Championship qualifying campaign. The previous record, of 12 goals in 10 games, had been held by Davor Suker of Croatia since 1996.
