Player Profile Gary Parkinson
Gary Anthony Parkinson was born in Thornaby, Teeside on 10 January 1968. After stating out as a junior at Everton he left due to homesickness and returned to the North East to join Middlesbrough.
Parkinson made his Middlesbrough debut in a 2-2 draw against Port Vale which was played at Hartlepool FC on 23 August 1986. He was an ever-present in the 1986/87 season, helping the club to promotion to Division Two as runners-up to Bournemouth.
The following season Parkinson made 38 appearances as Boro were promoted again via a two-legged play off victory against Chelsea . In the latter part of the season Parkinson moved from centre-half to right-back.
Parkinson made 36 appearances scoring two goals as he played in the top division for the first time in the 1988/89 season, but it wasn't enough to save Boro from relegation.
The 1989/90 season saw Parkinson make 41 appearances, scoring twice but was limited to just 10 appearances and one goal in the following season.
Parkinson helped Boro to his second promotion with the club as he made 27 appearances in the 1991/92 season. Parkinson made 4 appearances in the Premiership in 1992/93, before joining Southend on loan in October 1992, making 6 appearances.
After 202 appearances for Boro, scoring 5 goals, Parkinson signed for Third Division Bolton in March 1993 on a free transfer by Bruce Ricoh who he had known at Middlesbrough. He made his debut on 6 April 1993 at home against Stockport. Parkinson made2 substitute appearances for Bolton in the 1992./93 season and one appearance in 1993/94.
In January 1994 Parkinson joined Burnley for £80,000 and made his debut on 29 January 1994 at home to Cambridge . In his first season Parkinson made 20 appearances, scoring one goal.
Although his most famous goal of the 1994/95 season was to score the winner against Stockport in the play-off final at Wembley.
The 1994/95 season saw Parkinson make 43 appearances for the Clarets, scoring twice. After 29 appearances in 1995/96, Parkinson made 43 appearances, scoring once in the 1996/97 season. His last appearance for Burnley was at home to Watford on 3 May 1997. Parkinson had made 135 appearances for the Clarets scoring 4 goals.
Parkinson joined Preston and made his PNE debut on the opening day of the season in a 0-0 draw at Gillingham on 9 August. His first PNE goal came in a 2-0 win at Carlisle on 17 October. Parkinson made 45 league appearances during the 1997/988 season, scoring 5 goals.
The 1998/99 season saw Parkinson make his 500 th senior appearance in a 1-0 win at Wycombe on 9 October. His run of 56 consecutive games for Preston ended when he suffered a serious knee injury at Chesterfield on 23 January 1999. A month later Parkinson re-appeared at Reading, but suffered a recurrence of the injury which led to an operation and a lengthy stay on the sidelines. In the meantime to cover the right- back spot PNE signed Graham Alexander.
His only appearance in the Division Two Championship winning team was a substitute appearance in the final match of the 1999/2000 season.
After recovering from injury he could only make 11 appearances in 2000/01 as Alexander continued the take the right-back position. The last of his 84 league appearances for PNE occurred in a 2-0 defeat at Deepdale against Birmingham on 20 February, he had scored a total of 6 goals.
The following month Parkinson joined Blackpool on a free transfer and made his debut on 24 March 2001 in a 2-1 defeat at Macclesfield. He made 9 appearances during the season and helped Blackpool win the League Two play-off final in Cardiff with a 4-2 win against Leyton Orient.
Parkinson scored his only goal for Blackpool in a 3-2 win over Stoke in the LDV Vans Trophy in October 2001. The last of his 15 league appearances for the 2001/02 season and 24 in total came in a 3-0 home victory against Wrexham on 1 April 2002.
In August 2002 Parkinson joined non-league Stalybridge before returning to Blackpool as Head of Youth.
