Player Profile Willie Irvine
William John Irvine was born in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland on 18 June 1943 and joined Burnley as a junior in June 1960.
After consistently scoring in the junior ranks Irvine made his Central League debut in October 1961 scoring a hat-trick in a 6-1 home win against Barnsley.
Reserve appearances was limited in 1961/62, but he gained a regular place in 1962/63 following Andy Lochhead promotion to the first team, helping Burnley to win the Central League title for the second successive season. Irvine won his first Irish under 23 cap in February 1963. Although he had not played a first-team match, Irvine won his first senior cap in April 1963 as Northern Ireland was beaten 4-1 in Belfast by Wales. In the penultimate league match of the season on 11 May 1963, Irvine made his first team debut, scoring the first goal in a 3-2 win at Arsenal. Then in the final match of the season Irvine scored a hat-trick on his home debut as the Clarets beat Birmingham 3-1.
His exploits at the end of the 62/63 season did not lead to a guaranteed first team place but still scored 4 goals in 7 league appearances in the1963/64 season.
Irvine replaced Jimmy Robson in the Burnley strike force and formed a great partnership with Lochhead which netted 118 league goals between them. Irvine scored 22 goals in 33 league appearances in 1964/65 and the following season was an ever-present as Burnley finished third in the First Division. He scored a total of 37 goals in 1965/66 (29 league, 5 FA Cup and 4 League Cup goals) a total which has only ever been exceeded by Bert Freeman and George Beel.
After scoring 13 goals in 23 appearances, disaster struck on 31 January 1967 in an FA Cup replay at Goodison Park when Irvine's leg was broken by Everton winger Jimmy Morrison from a premeditated challenge with the ball five yards away.
Irvine returned on the opening day of the 1967/68 season and scored in the 2-1 win at home to Coventry , but the injury had caused him to lose an extra yard of pace.
After scoring 78 league goals in 126 appearances for Burnley, Irvine joined Preston in March 1968. Similar to his first team start at Burnley, Irvine scored on his debut in a 2-1 home win against Aston Villa on 18 March 1968 and a hat-trick in his second match five days later in a 3-1 home victory against Huddersfield.
Although Irvine had just made 11 appearances for PNE in 1967/68 his 6 goals was just 2 behind leading scorer Derek Temple. Preston only lost twice in those 11 appearances helping the club to avoid relegation to Division Three by four points.
The 1968/69 season saw Irvine score 14 times from his first 16 league and cup appearances. He scored a brace twice during the season the first a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace on 21 September and in a 3-0 home FA Cup victory against Nottingham Forest.
Irvine made a total of 37 league appearances during the season and scored 16 league goals (with his cup goals it totals 20 for the season), as PNE finished in 14 th position.
The last season of the decade led to relegation to Division Three for Preston. Irvine made 19 appearances, scoring 5 goals. Two of the goals came in a 4-1 win against Birmingham on 15 November 1969.
Although Preston won the Third Division Title in the 1970/71 season, Irvine only made 14 appearances, scoring 3 goals. His last appearance for Preston was on Boxing Day 1970 in a 3-3 draw at Tranmere. Irvine had scored 27 goals in 81 league appearances for the Lilywhites.
In March 1971 Irvine joined Brighton and scored on his debut. The 1971/72 season saw Irvine joint top scorer with Kit Napier with 16 goals as Brighton finished runners' up to Aston Villa and promotion to the Second Division.
After 69 appearances and 27 goals for Brighton, Irvine joined Halifax in December 1972. Following refusal by Halifax to give permission for Irvine to play in a testimonial for Burnley's John Angus, Irvine promptly retired. He had made 10 league appearances for Halifax , scoring his only goal for the club in a 1-0 win against Scunthorpe on 27 January 1972.
Irvine made a total of 23 appearances for Northern Ireland scoring 8 times. This includes 3 appearances and 2 goals whilst at Preston in 1968/69.
In March 2005, Irvine brought out his autobiography called 'Together Again'.
Irvine still lives in Burnley and after football worked in the aerospace industry. Irvine also joined his old striking partner Andy Lochhead in hospitality department at Turf Moor.
