Player Profile GRAHAM SHAW
Graham Paul Shaw was born in Newcastle-under-Lyne on 7 June 1967 spending his younger days with the Newcastle branch of Knutton Rangers, team mates included Carl Beeston (Stoke 1985 -1996). Shaw signed professional terms for Stoke at the age of 18 in June 1985 to become the first signing for Stoke's new manager Mick Mills.
In four years Shaw made 99 appearances for Stoke scoring 18 goals.
In the FA Cup Third Round, Stoke were a whisker away in dumping Liverpool out of the cup on 9 January 1988. Shaw was a substitute who replaced Simon Stainrod with just a few minutes to go. With the score at 0-0 Shaw was put clear on the left but thinking he was off side, he hesitated allowing Mike Hooper to come out and block the shot. Liverpool returned to Anfield and won the replay.
In July 1989 Preston boss John McGrath came in with an offer of £70,000 which to many City fans surprise was, accepted.
Shaw made his debut for PNE on 19 August at Rotherham , scoring on his debut in a 3-1 defeat. Three days later Shaw scored at hat-trick at Deepdale in the League Cup tie against Tranmere, although Tranmere won the first leg tie 4-3. Goals in his next two matches against Bury and the second leg at Tranmere meant that Shaw had scored 6 goals in 4 matches but had not been on the winning side. The 1989/90 season saw Shaw score 9 goals from 30 appearances in all competitions. Preston finishing 19 in the Third Division with 79 goals conceded.
The following season saw PNE finish two places higher with Shaw being the leading scorer with 10 league goals, as Shaw just missed two league games. In total Shaw scored 15 goals in all competitions in 1990/91. Shaw scored a brace twice during the season in the 6-1 victory in the Leyland DAF Cup and both goals in the league victory against Swansea .
The 1991/92 season Shaw was again the top scorer with 14 goals, 8 goals more than second place Warren Joyce, as Shaw appeared in every league game.
The final league game of the season on May 2 1992 at home to Bury turned out to be his last game in a white shirt. As on the eve of the 1992/93 season he was offered the chance to return to Stoke and agreed a fee of £70,000.
The blow of losing Shaw was softened by the return of Tony Ellis who was brought back to Preston as part of the deal after he transferred to Stoke from Preston in December 1989 the transfer also allowed Les Chapman to use some of the money to strengthen the squad as PNE had finished a disappointing 17. Shaw had scored 29 goals in 121 league appearances for Preston .
Shaw helped Stoke win the Second Division Championship in 1992/93, but his persistent back injuries limited his appearances for the Potters. In August 1994 he went on loan to Plymouth making six appearances but didn't register a goal. After nearly three seasons Shaw had only made 36 appearances in his second spell for Stoke scoring 5 goals.
On 23rd March 1995 Shaw was offered the chance to join Rochdale on a free transfer.
Unfortunately injuries hampered his time at Rochdale and did not score a league goal for the club in 22 appearances, although he did score twice in cup competitions. Shaw was released by Rochdale on 31 May 1996, a month before his 29 birthday.
Shaw turned to non-league football signing for Leek Town on 1 August 1997 for a short spell. As Shaw was unable to make a comeback due to his back injuries he turned to the PFA for help.
Instead of remaining in football to coach, Shaw decided to go to Staffordshire University and study criminal law. With the help of the PFA's education fund and six years of hard work he passed his final exams to become a fully qualified criminal lawyer. Shaw now practices for a firm in Stoke-on Trent , where he is now head of the criminal department.
