Player Profile SEAN HASLEGRAVE
Sean Matthew Haslegrave was born in Stoke on Trent on 7th June 1951. At the age of 15 he went for a trial at Stoke but was rejected as they thought he was too small. Once he finished school Haslegrave became an apprentice welder but continued to play in the local amateur leagues.
Two years later in November 1968 he signed for Stoke City under Tony Waddington and progressed through Youth and Reserve teams before breaking into the first eleven in 1970.
Haslegrave quickly settled into the side but due to a troublesome knee he required a cartilage operation and missed Stoke City's League Cup Final in 1972.
Whilst playing for Stoke in a UEFA Cup 2nd leg match against Ajax , Haslegrave was substituted in the 65 minute. Whilst going to speak to the manager he was approached by Brian Clough who had travelled to Holland to watch him telling him he had had a fantastic performance and wanted to sign him. Stoke drew 0-0 on the night and lost on away goals after a 1sl leg finished 1-1.
In July 1976 after making 113 appearances for Stoke scoring 5 goals he became Brian Clough's first signing for Nottingham Forest for £50,000.
Haslegrave made his debut against Notts Co on 7th August 1976 in the Anglo Scottish Cup. After a bright start for Forest Haslegrave injured both ankles in quick succession and from then on struggled to regain his place, although he had proved his fitness in the Forest Reserves.
The signing of ex-PNE player Archie Gemmill in September 1977 led to Haslegrave signing for Nobby Stiles' Preston side on 29 September 1977 for around £25,000. Haslegrave had made 7 appearances for Forest during 1976/77 scoring 1 goal.
Haslegrave replaced Francis Burns in midfield as PNE were sixth from bottom of the old Third Division and having only won one of their first eight games of the 1977/78 season.
Nine months later, Haslegrave's contribution had led to Preston promoted to the old Second Division finishing third and above Peterborough on goal difference.
The 1978/79 season saw Preston finished in their highest position since 1964 as they finished seventh. Haslegrave only missed one match during that season and scored his first goal in a 3-2 home defeat against eventual champions Crystal Palace in October 1978. Also in October Haslegrave even managed to win a £100 prize in the Club's lottery. The following season Preston finished 10th with Haslegreave losing his place to Gordon Coleman in February 1980.
After a few years of promise Preston succumbed to another bitterly disappointing season in 1980/81 as the season ended in relegation back to the Third Division. In the last game of the season Preston beat Derby 2-1 at the Baseball Ground, but Cardiff's draw against Champions West Ham led to Cardiff surviving on goal difference. This was his 113th and final game for Preston scoring 2 goals, his second scored against Cardiff in April 1981. Nobby Stiles was sacked at the end of the season and Haslegrave was released by Preston .
Haslegrave signed for Crewe in August 1981 who at the time was rooted at the foot of the Fourth Division and in one season finished with only 20 points. After 82 appearances and 1 goal he moved to York .
Under his old pal Dennis Smith York won the Fourth Division title with a record number of points and strikers Walwyn & Byrne scoring 60 between them. York also knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup with a last minute Keith Houchen goal at Bootham Crescent . Haslegrave stayed for 4 years making 142 appearances.
In August 1987 Haslegrave linked up with the late Cyril Knowles at Torquay initially as a player then a coach and finally as Assistant Manager. At the end of the previous season they had just avoided relegation to Division Four on the last day. In his first season at Torquay they reached the play offs and to Wembley in the Sherpa Van Trophy Final against Bolton .
Once his playing days had ended he was approached by Sam Allardyce to help the PNE youngsters becoming a Director of PNE's school of excellence from the under tens upwards.
For over 10 years Haslegrave, who holds a UEFA (A) coaching badge has been Head Coach at Cardinal Newman College and following success of winning 2 of the last 5 College titles has been invited to be the coach of the English Colleges Team.
