Player Profile David Beresford
David Beresford was born in Middleton on 11 November 1976. He came through the youth ranks at Oldham and made his debut in 1994. In August 1995 Beresford joined Swansea on loan and made 6 appearances.
Beresford returned to Oldham and played his last game for the Latics in a 1-0 home defeat against Crystal Palace on 23 March 1997. Beresford had made 64 league appearances scoring twice.
Four days later Beresford joined Huddersfield for £350,000. His debut was on 31 March in a 2-1 home win against Sheffield United and scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 win at Southend on 26 April 1997.
The 1997/98 season saw him play only 8 league match due to injuries and a hernia operation. The following season saw him appear in 19 Championship matches.
In December 1999, Beresford joined League One side Preston on loan. His debut was in the 3-0 home win against Blackpool on 18 December as cover for Lee Cartwright. Unfortunately due to a hamstring injury his debut only lasted 45 minutes. This was his only league start for the club. His third an final substitute appearance was in a 2-1 defeat at Stoke on 14 January 2000.
In September 2000 Beresford joined another League One side Port Vale and his debut was in the Potteries Derby against Stoke on 17 September in a 1-1 draw. He made a further three appearances but was not on the winning side once.
After 35 appearances and 3 goals for Huddersfield, Beresford joined League Two side Hull City on a free transfer on 29 June 2001.
Beresford stayed at League Two side Hull for one season, making his debut in a 3-1 win at Exeter on 11 August 2001 and his final match on 20 April 2002 in a 1-1 draw against Lincoln. He made 41 appearances and scored one goal in the 5-1 win against Cheltenham in November 2001.
On 8 July 2002 Beresford joined Plymouth on a free transfer and made his debut on 24 August 2002 in a 2-1 win at Cheltenham when he was replaced by Martin Phillips in the 72 nd minute. The 2002/03 season saw Beresford make 16 league appearances with 10 of these as a substitute.
Beresford only made one appearance for Plymouth in 2003/04 before joining Macclesfield on a month's loan. This was a 3-3 draw at Home Park against Bright when Beresford replaced David Norris with 10 minutes left.
After five appearances for Macclesfield, Beresford joined Tranmere in November 2003. He made his debut in a 2-0 defeat at Barnsley on 15 November 2003 and scored one goal in the 2003/04 season, scoring the fifth goal from the subs bench in a 5-1 win at Bournemouth in April 2004.
His final appearance for Tranmere was in the play off semi final on 17 May 2005. He scored three minutes from time to take the tie into extra time but Hartlepool won on penalties. Beresford had scored 3 league goals in 46 appearances.
In July 2005 Beresford joined Macclesfield and made 16 appearances during the 2005/06 season. His only goal was in the LDV Vans Trophy victory against Chesterfield.
