Player Profile - Brian Taylor

Brian John Taylor was born in Gateshead on 2 July 1949. Taylor started his career with non-league Durham City, before joining First Division Coventry in February 1968. But after three years with the club he did not make a first team league appearance.

In May 1971 Taylor joined Third Division Walsall and stayed for over six years. His first season with the club in 1971/72 was the most successful in his career in goal scoring terms, netting 9 goals from 33 appearances. He only finished two behind top scorer Colin Morris as the Saddlers finished ninth.

Walsall struggled for the next two seasons in seventeenth and fifteenth place respectively. Taylor continued to play the majority of the games, scoring 4 times from 39 matches in 1972/73 and 7 goals from 38 games in 1973/74.

Taylor could play either as a winger or at full-back; he made 25 appearances in 1974/75 scoring once as Walsall finished eighth. The following season they finished one place higher as Taylor scored twice from 35 games.

His last full season for the Saddlers was in 1976/77 with one goal in 34 appearances as Walsall finished fifteenth.

In October 1977 after scoring 25 goals from 216 league appearances Taylor joined Third Division Plymouth and scored 5 goals in 27 appearances in 1977/78 as the Pilgrims finished in nineteenth position.

The following season Taylor only made a further 8 appearances before being transferred to Second Division Preston in October 1978, this was the highest position he ever played in. He made his debut as a substitute for Don O'Riordan in a 5-3 defeat at Fulham on 31 October. Taylor made his full debut in a 2-1 home win against Cardiff on 11 November replacing John McMahon who had spent the majority of the 1970's as the right-back. He kept the shirt for the remainder of the season making 30 appearances in what was Preston's highest position for many years when they finished seventh.

The 1979/80 season saw Taylor make 35 appearances and scored is only goal for the club in a 2-0 victory at Deepdale against Notts County on 22 March 1980; this was also his last league goal of his career.

The 1980/81 season saw Taylor make 22 league appearances, sharing the full-back position with Simon Westwell as Preston were relegated to Division Three. The following season Taylor made 12 league appearances, the last of these was in a 3-1 home defeat to Bristol City on 27 February when he was replaced by John Anderson who took over the role as right-back.

Taylor joined Fourth Division Wigan on loan in March 1982, making 8 appearances and helping them obtain promotion.. Taylor returned to Deepdale but in the close season he left the club after making 99 league appearances for the Lilywhites.

Taylor had a spell with Lytham St.Annes after leaving Preston; sadly he passed away in 1993 aged 44 due to motor neurone disease.
