Player Profile - Jonathan Clark
Jonathan Clark was born in Swansea on 12 November 1958. Clark signed on as an apprentice with Manchester United in March 1973 and as a professional in November 1975.
His only appearance for Manchester United came as a substitute for Colin Waldron in the 3-3 draw against Sunderland at Old Trafford on 10 October 1976.
In September 1978 the former United manager Tommy Docherty signed him for Derby for £50,000 stating he was 'the best thing to come out of Wales since coal'.
His debut came in the 3-0 defeat at Norwich on 30 September 1978 and made 17 appearances for Derby in 1978/79 as they just avoided relegation to the Second Division by finishing in 19th position.
With Colin Addison having replaced Docherty as manager, Derby made a poor start to the following season. Clark was called up to the first team in November 1979 and, although he demonstrated plenty of neat touches, he was unable to secure a regular place in the side. Clark made 14 appearances during the season and scored his only goal of the season in a 2-1 home defeat by Coventry on Boxing Day. But just five victories from December onwards saw Derby relegated in 21st place, five points below the safety zone.
Clark played in each of the first five games of the 1980/81 Division Two campaign, but temporarily lost his place as manager Colin Addison shuffled his pack plus a sending off in a 3-1 defeat against his home town club Swansea on 11 October. Once restored he scored in a 3-1 win at Chelsea on 12 November and a 2-0 home win against West Ham United two weeks later. Clark fell out of favour prior to the Christmas programme. He reappeared as a substitute in a 2-2 draw with Wrexham on 28 February 1981 which was his last game for the club. Clark had made 53 appearances for Derby, scoring 3 goals.
Clark joined Preston in August 1981 following the arrival of former player Tommy Docherty to play for him for the third time.
He made his debut in the opening day of the 1981/82 season in a 2-1 defeat at Millwall.
Clark played in the first seventeen matches under Docherty but with only three victories to show for it Docherty was sacked on 4 December. Due to injuries his last match of the season was the following day in a 3-1 home defeat to Brentford. His only goal of the season came in this second appearance in a 2-1 victory at Halifax in the League Cup on 1 September.
Clark just made three appearances in October 1982 for the 1982/83 campaign. The following season saw Clark make 31 appearances and score 5 league goals including two from the penalty spot. His first league goal came in a 2-1 defeat at home to Lincoln on 29 October.
Clark's best season for the club was in the 1984/85 although he could not save them from relegation to the Fourth Division for the first time. Clark made 40 appearances, scoring 5 goals including a brace in the 6-4 defeat at Plymouth on 29 September 1984.
Clark played in the first six of the seven league matches in Preston's darkest season of 1985/86 as Tommy Booth left in January and his replacement Brian Kidd just lasted two months in the manager's chair.
This led to Clark becoming caretaker manager for the remainder of the season, his first match was a 3-2 win at home to Southend on 22 March, their first win since 4 January. Further wins at Tranmere, Mansfield and Scunthorpe plus a victory at home to Wrexham had looked like Preston had turned the corner with a maximum of 10 points from his first five games. But two draws in the last five games of the season including a 4-0 defeat at Aldershot on the last day of the season saw Preston finish 23rd and having to seek re-election.
The arrival of John McGrath as manager and the artificial pitch led to a new beginning for Preston. The first match of the season saw only Clark and three others who had played in the previous season. Clark made 12 league appearances during 1986/87, his last game was the 5-0 victory at home to neighbours Chorley in the FA Cup Second round replay on 9 December. Clark had made 110 league appearances for Preston, netting 10 goals.
Clark joined Bury and scored one goal from 14 appearances for the remainder of the season.
In August 1987 Clark joined Carlisle and made 41 appearances, scoring once during the 1987/88 season as Carlisle finished 23rd in the Fourth Division. The 1988/89 season saw Clark make a further 9 appearances and another goal.
Clark then moved into non-league football, briefly with Morecambe and finally Rhyl.
