Player Profile Brian O'Neil

Brian O'Neil was born in Paisley on 6 September 1992. O'Neil signed during the 1989/90 season but didn't make an appearance and in August 1990 he joined New Zealand side Porirua Viard United on loan. On return to Celtic he made his Bhoys debut on 17th August 1991 as a substitute in a 4-1 home win against Falkirk. O'Neil made 27 further appearances during the season, scoring one goal. His most productive season was in the 1992/93 season when he netted 3 goals in 17 appearances.

His made is debut for Scotland in the 1-0 home win over Austria on 27 March 1996. His last appearance for Celtic came in the Glasgow derby in a 3-1 defeat at Ibrox on 2 January 1997 .O'Neil scored 8 goals from 118 appearances for Celtic.

In March 1997 O'Neil moved south to join Premier League side Nottingham Forest on loan and made his debut on 24 March in a 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough. After a further three draws his last appearance came in a 5-0 defeat at Newcastle on 11 May which saw Forest relegated.

For the start of the 1997/98 season O'Neil joined Aberdeen for a fee of £850,000 and made his debut in a 0-0 draw at home to Kilmarnock on 2 August. He made 29 appearances during the season and scored his only goal in a 3-3 draw against Dunfermline in March 1998.

In July 1998 O'Neil joined German side VfL Wolfsburg for £350,000, making 50 appearances and scored 3 goals in just over two years.

In November 2000 O'Neil joined Derby but his debut on 25 November against Manchester United lasted just two minutes due to a knee injury causing him to miss the next two months. He retuned for the 0-0 draw against Blackburn in the FA Cup and made a further three Premier League appearances during the 2000/01 season.

His second game of the 2001/02 season saw him receive a red card in a 3-1 defeat at Ipswich. O'Neil missed four months of the season and made 10 appearances during the season. His last Premier League appearance came towards the end of March in a 4-3 home defeat to Everton.

His seventeenth and last appearance for the Rams came in a 2-0 defeat at home to Preston on 21 September 2002.

It was Preston who he joined on 4 January 2003 and made his debut on 18 January in a 3-0 defeat at Ipswich. O'Neil made 15 appearances during the 2002/03 season.

The following season saw O'Neil score his first PNE goal in a 4-1 home win against Rotherham on 20 September 2003. He also scored in the 3-3 draw against Reading in the FA Cup Third Round tie. In total he made 29 league appearances during the season, some of these was as an emergency centre-half. An injury during the defeat to Millwall on 21 February led him to miss the remainder of the season.

The 2004/05 season saw O'Neil become a fixture to the team as Preston reached the Play Offs. He netted 3 goals from 43 appearances but could not help the Lilywhites defeat West Ham in the Final.

The 2005/06 season saw O'Neil make a return to the Scottish team in a 2-2 draw against Austria on 17 August 2005. This was his seventh and last appearance for his Country. His previous appearance was in April 1999 in a 1-0 victory in Germany. In January 2006 O'Neil scored twice in three days against the same opposition in Crystal Palace. His 100th league appearance came against his former club Derby on 10 December in a 1-1 draw.

His final appearance for Preston came in another play off defeat, this time in the semi-final against Leeds on 8 May 2006. O'Neil had made 112 appearances, scoring 5 league goals.
