Player Profile Paul McGee


Paul Gerard McGee was born in Sligo on 19 th June 1954. McGee stated his football career for his home town club Sligo Rovers in the Republic of Ireland at the age of 16. In 1972 McGee moved to England to join non-league Kidderminster Harriers. McGee then moved to Hereford United but could not get into the first team.


McGee returned to Ireland and joined Finn Harps, winning an FAI cup winners medal. McGee then returned to Sligo Rovers and helped them win the League of Ireland Championship in 1976/77. McGee had also spent his summers playing in the Canadian League, initially with Toronto Jets and later with Montreal Castors in which he won a Canadian League Championship medal.


In November 1977 McGee joined First Division Queens Park Rangers and made his debut for the club on 19 th November 1977 in a 4-1 defeat at Coventry . McGee made 17 League Appearances for QPR in the 1977/78 season, scoring 4 goals as QPR finished fourth bottom avoided relegation by one point.

McGee made his debut for the Republic of Ireland in a 4-2 home win against Turkey on 5 th April 1978.


McGee made a further 22 appearances, scoring 3 goals for QPR as they finished third from bottom in the 1978/79 season and was relegated from the First Division.


In October 1979 McGee was signed by Nobby Stiles at Preston making his debut as a substitute for Danny Cameron in the 1-1 draw at Luton on 27 th October 1979. His first start in the first team was three weeks later in a 1-1 draw against Leicester.

Two days after his debut for Preston, McGee won his 10 th cap for Eire as they beat USA in a friendly 3-2. McGee won a further four caps that season against Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Switzerland and Argentina.


McGee's first goal was in the first league game in 1980 as PNE beat Fulham 3-2. March saw McGee in a rich vein of form, scoring in five league games on the trot in the first three weeks of the month. The first four matches were draws whilst the fifth game was a 2-0 win against Notts County. Two further goals in April saw Preston finish 10 th in the Second Division.


The following season saw McGee score 4 goals in 34 appearances including both goals in a 2-0 victory against Cambridge on 6 th September.


On 15 th October 1980 McGee won his final Cap for Eire as a substitute in a 1-1 draw at home to Belgium in a World Cup Qualifier. McGee had scored 4 goals for Eire, half of these whilst at Preston.


Unfortunately this didn't stop McGee suffering his second relegation as PNE finished third from bottom.

McGee only made 4 appearances for Preston in 1981/82 and joined Burnley in November 1981 as the manager Tommy Docherty short reign ended with the sack the following month.

When McGee joined Burnley they were just hovering above a relegation position but a run of just two defeats from November help Burnley to win the Third Division Championship above Carlisle on goal difference. The following season McGee returned to Ireland on loan after making a total of 34 appearances for the Clarets scoring 9 goals.


McGee initially went on loan for Dundalk before signing for Shamrock Rovers in August 1984 when he played in the European Cup.


McGee did return to Preston in November 1984 making two further league appearances. The first of these was on 24 November 1984 with a 3-2 home victory against Bristol City . The second was a 4-0 defeat at Gillingham. McGee did make one final appearance for PNE, which turned out to be one of the most embarrassing in the clubs history, losing 4-1 at home to non-league Telford United.


McGee also played for Waterford, Sligo Rovers and Galway before joining Dutch club Haarlem. After his spell in Holland, McGee returned to his native Ireland with Derry City and Athlone Town .


McGee had scored 143 league goals in the League of Ireland. As well as 15 Eire full international caps, McGee had also won 10 Youth caps and an Under 21 cap.
