Player Profile - Paul Raynor

Paul James Raynor was born in Nottingham on 29 April 1966. He was an apprentice with Nottingham Forest and made 3 appearances for the First Division Side in the 1984/85 season. After a loan spell with Bristol Rovers in March 1985, making 8 appearances, Raynor joined Second Division Huddersfield in August 1985.

Raynor made 30 appearances, scoring 5 goals in the 1985/86 season; his first league goal came in a 3-3 Draw at Leeds Road against Carlisle on 26 October 1985. He made a further 20 appearances in the following season, scoring 4 more goals before joining Fourth Division Swansea on 27 March 1987. For the Swans he scored one goal in 12 appearances for the remainder of the 1986/87 season.

The 1987/88 season saw Raynor net his most goals in one season with 8 goals from 44 appearances. Raynor also scored in the Play Off victory over two legs against Torquay.

The following season saw Raynor limited to just 5 matches, in October 1988 he also had a spell on loan with fellow Welsh club Wrexham.

Raynor had a further four seasons with Swansea with 21 matches and 4 goals in 1988/89, 6 goals from 40 matches in 1989/90 and 5 goals in 43 matches in 1990/91. His last season for the club was in the 1991/92 season when he made 26 appearances, scoring twice. Raynor also scored in the Welsh Cup triumphs on 1989 and 1991. In total for Swansea, Raynor netted 27 goals from 191 appearances.

In March 1992 Raynor joined Cambridge and made 49 appearances and scored twice before joining Preston in July 1993 for £36,000.

His debut came on the opening day of the 1993/94 season in a 2-0 defeat at Deepdale against Crewe; his first goal for PNE came in a 2-0 win at Lincoln on 4 September. Raynor scored 6 league goals from 39 appearances.

His most famous appearance came in the final match on the plastic pitch in the second leg of the Play-Off Semi Final against Torquay on 18 May 1994. Torquay were reduced to 10 men when Darren Brown was sent off for a punch on Raynor in the 36th minute. Stuart Hicks headed a Raynor corner to make it 3-1 on the night to take the match into Extra Time. Raynor then headed an Andy Fensome cross to take Preston to their first Wembley appearance since 1964. Although Raynor scored in the final Wycombe won the match 4-2.

The 1994/95 season saw another failed Play-Off challenge as Raynor made 38 appearances, netting 3 goals.

Raynor's last appearance for the Lilywhites came in a 1-0 win at Hereford on 9 September 1995; he had made 80 appearances, scoring 9 goals.

On 11 September 1995 Raynor re-joined Cambridge in a swap for Dean Barrick and made a further 79 appearances, scoring 7 times.

After a spell in China with Guang Deong, Raynor returned to England with Leyton Orient and made 15 appearances. His last league appearance came on 26 September 1998 in a 2-1 defeat at Rochdale.

Raynor then joined non-league side Kettering before joining Stevenage Borough, Ilkeston, Boston United, Kings Lynn, Hendesford Town and Ossett Albion.

He then dropped into non-league spheres, where he played for Kettering Town and Ilkeston Town, prior to his move to Boston United. Raynor has also spent time with King's Lynn and Hendersford Town which he had a brief spell as Manager In February 2004 he rejoined Boston United, where he combined his playing duties with a coaching role at Sheffield United.

Raynor later took the role of first-team coach, before being promoted to assistant manager when Steve Evans returned to the club.

In September 2006, Raynor abandoned the title of assistant manager to become club coach, alongside new recruit and former Preston player Colin Hendry.

Following Boston's relegation in May 2007, who also entered administration during their final game of the season with Wrexham, Evans and Raynor resigned their managerial positions.

The Raynor / Evans partnership moved to Crawley Town with Raynor being appointed Assistant Manager.
