Player Profile – Jack Pears

 

John (Jack) Pears was born in Ormskirk on 23 February 1907 and played in the Outside-Left position.

 

Pears started with Westhead St James, Skelmersdale and Burscough before joining Liverpool in 1927. He didn’t make an appearance for Liverpool and joined Third Division North side Rotherham for the 1928/29 season, netting 7 goals in 21 appearances.

 

The following season Pears joined Accrington Stanley from the same division and scored 8 goals in 21 appearances. The 1930/31 season Pears moved to Second Division Oldham and finished the 1931/32 season as joint top scorer with Bill Johnstone on 11 goals. The 1932/33 season he was top scorer with 13 goals from 32 league appearances.

 

After making 92 appearances for the Latics with 34 goals he joined Second Division Preston and made his debut in a 2-0 win at home to Notts County on 17 March 1934. He scored the winner in is second appearance a week later in a 2-1 win at Swansea. His second goal came on 31 March in a 4-2 win at Deepdale against Millwall and made 7 appearances in their promotion winning season.

 

The following season Pears scored in the second match of the season in a 2-1 win at Spurs on 27 August, his last appearance for the Lilywhites was a 4-0 win at Portsmouth on 20 October 1934. He had scored 4 goals from 18 appearances. For the remainder of the 1934/35 season he joined Sheffield United making 13 appearances and scoring 3 goals from the Blades.

 

The 1935/36 season Pears joined Second Division Swansea and scored 4 goals from 19 appearances as the Swans finished in thirteenth position. Pears scored a further 6 goals in 31 appearances as the Swans finished in sixteenth position to take his total to 10 goals from 50 appearances for the club.

 

Pears joined Third Division North side Hull in 1937/38 with 8 goals in 30 appearances but stayed just for one season as they finished in third position. He then moved to Rochdale in 1938 but didn’t make an appearance before returning to non-league Mossley.
