Player Profile Colin Greenall

Colin Anthony Greenall was born in Billinge on 30 December 1963. His career began at Blackpool as an apprentice and was given his chance by the late Alan Ball when Greenall made his professional debut on 23 August 1980 in a 1-1 draw at Huddersfied. At 16 years and 237 days he became Blackpool's then-youngest ever league player. A record later broken in 1989 by Trevor Sinclair. Three days later Greenall played in the first leg League Cup match at Goodison when Everton won 3-0. In January 1981 he signed professional forms.

Greenall served Blackpool for 6 years winning the PFA Fourth Division Player of the Year at the age of 20 and well as winning England Youth honours.

Following a contractual dispute with Blackpool, Greenall joined Third Division Gillingham on 10 September 1986 for a fee of £40,000. Greenall had made 183 League appearances for the Seasiders', scoring 9 times. Greenall had also made a further 21 League and FA Cup matches.

Greenall had scored 4 goals in 62 league appearances, when on 15 February 1988 he joined Second Division Oxford for a fee of £235,000. He soon became the Oxford captain following the departure of Tommy Caton. Whilst Greenall was at Oxford he played alongside Paul Simpson. Greenall had made 67 appearances for Oxford, scoring twice.

Greenall made 3 appearances for Bury on loan in January 1990. His first game saw the Shakers win 4-0 away against Division three leaders Notts County but an injury soon after saw him return to Oxford. In July 1990 Sam Ellis went back to the Manor Ground to finally sign Greenall in a £125,000 deal. A cultured and totally reliable defender. In his two spells at Bury, Greenall played 71 league games scoring 5 goals. He played alongside Peter Valentine and they enjoyed a superb partnership until the club's cash crisis saw Greenall sold cheaply to Preston North End for £50,000
on 27 March 1992.

Greenall made his debut in a 2-1 win at home to Bolton the following day. His only goal for Preston was in his second match in a 1-1 draw at Swansea on 31 March. At the time of his arrival PNE were just two points from a relegation position. But just two defeats from the last nine games helped Preston to pull away from the drop zone. His only goal for Preston was in his second match in a 1-1 draw at Swansea on 31 March.

Injuries during the 1992/93 season led to his first appearance of the season only happening on 6 February in a defeat at Bournemouth and played in the remaining 19 games.

Unfortunately he couldn't stop PNE conceding 94 goals during the season and relegation to the Third Division. His last appearance after 29 league appearances was in a 1-0 defeat at Bolton on 8 May 1993.

On 13 August 1993 Greenall joined Chester on a free transfer and made 42 appearances during the season, scoring 1 goal.

He won the Chester Player of the Year award but for he 1994/95 season Greenall had joined Lincoln.

He stayed just over a season at Lincoln making 43 league appearances and scoring 3 goals before joining Wigan on 18 September 1995.

Greenall was appointed club captain and was an ever present in 1996/97 as Wigan won the Third Division Championship and had the proud honour of lifting the Latics first major trophy. He also went through the season without receiving a caution.

Greenall joined the backroom staff at Wigan as first team coach in 1988. After coming out of retirement Greenall made his Wembley debut in 1999 when Wigan beat Millwall 1-0 to win the Auto Windowscreens Shield.

Following the departure of manager Bruce Rioch in February 2001, Greenall became caretaker manager for six matches losing only once. In April he was replaced by Steve Bruce. Greenall became reserve team manager but resigned in November 2001.

In June 2002 Greenall joined Rochdale as Head of Youth Development with a duo with Preston connections. He replaced Jamie Hoyland, who had been promoted to assistant manager under the new boss Paul Simpson. Two years later he became Director of Centre of Excellence at Rochdale.

In August 2004 Colin Hendry appointed Greenall as Youth Coach at Blackpool and was later appointed as Coach Education Manager at the Lancashire FA
in August 2005.
