Player Profile - Jimmy Baxter

James Cunningham (Jimmy) Baxter was the cousin of Preston legend Willie Cunningham and was born on 8 November 1925 in Dunfermline.

Baxter started his career with Crossgate Juveniles before playing for his home town club.

In August 1945 Baxter who played as an inside-forward moved to England and joined Second Division Barnsley for a fee of £3,000.

It wasn't until the 1946/47 season did Baxter make his debut, scoring 7 goals from 35 league appearances as the Tykes finished in tenth spot. He scored 7 goals the following season including two penalties from 32 appearances as the club finished twelfth.

The 1948/49 season saw Baxter finished top scorer for the club with 15 goals, missing only one match during the season as Barnsley finished ninth.

He scored a further 15 goals the following season but was two goals behind top scorer Alex Wright as Baxter made 40 appearances.

Baxter scored a further ten goals in the next two season with Barnsley just avoided relegation from the Second Division in 1951/52 when they finished third bottom.

Preston turned to Baxter in July 1952 as a long term replacement for Bobby Beattie and made his debut in the 1-0 victory at Tottenham on 4 October 1952. His first goal for Preston came in his fourth appearance in a 5-2 win at Portsmouth. Baxter scored a total of 7 goals from 33 appearances as Preston finished runners-up to Arsenal for the First Division title on goal difference.

The 1953/54 season saw Baxter play every league game, he scored an hat-trick in the 6-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday on 26 August 1953 and a brace in the 6-1 FA Cup win at home to Ipswich. Baxter scored 15 league goals during the season, including 7 from the penalty spot. The season ended in disappointment as Baxter wore the number 10 shirt in the FA Cup final defeat to West Brom.

The following season saw Baxter score 5 goals in his first six matches including a brace in the 5-2 win at Cardiff. Baxter scored regularly during the season including two further braces in the matches against Huddersfield. Baxter finished top scorer with 17 goals from 39 matches as Preston finished fourteenth.

The partnership of Tommy Thompson and Tom Finney led to Baxter playing a deeper role as Baxter netted 7 goals from 29 appearances in 1955/56 as Preston just avoided relegation by one point. The following season saw Baxter miss just three matches as PNE finished third. His 9 goals included a brace in the 7-1 win against Portsmouth.

The 1957/58 season saw Preston finish runners-up again as Baxter scored five goals. He also scored five in 1958/59 including a goal on his last appearance for Preston in the 1-1 draw at West Ham on 18 April 1959. Baxter had scored 65 goals from 245 league appearances.

In July 1959 Baxter rejoined Bansley who were now in the Third Division and made 26 appearances, scoring 3 goals in the 1959/60 season to take the total of his two spells with the Tykes to 57 goals from 248 league appearances.

Baxter then moved into non-league football with Morecambe and Wombwell. He passed away in 1994.
