Benjamin Haigh (Benny) Green was born in Penistone on 23 February 1883. Green played in the Inside-Right position and started his career with Penistone Juniors.
The 1901/02 season saw Green join Second Division Barnsley scoring twice in 10 league appearances. The following season saw Green top score for the Tykes with 16 goals from 30 appearances, 6 more than Frank Cornan.
A further 6 matches in 1903/04 took his total to 46 league appearances and 18 goals before joining First Division Small Heath. He scored 10 goals in each of the 1904/05 and in 1905/06, when the club was renamed
