Player Profile Simon Davey

Simon Archibald Davey was born on 1 October 1970 in Swansea and

signed for his home town side when he was barely 15 years of age. Terry Yorath liked what he saw and gave Davey his first opportunity within a matter of months. He was named to sit on the bench in the League game against Torquay, having just turned 16, and his dream came true when he got to play the last twenty minutes. This was his only appearance in the 1996/97 season.

Davey made a further 4 appearances in 1987/88 and 3 appearances in the 1988/89 season. He made 18 appearances in the1989/90 and 1990/91 seasons, scoring twice in both seasons.

In August 1992 Aiden McCaffrey contacted Swansea and agreed to take Davey on a free transfer. Within a matter of a few games the midfielder had won over the Cumbrian crowd and he took on the role of team captain. A sending off in the home game against Wrexham in October 1992 was the only blight on his first season. His first goal for the club came in the 2-0 home win against Northampton in November 1992, and he went on to make 38 league appearances in the 1992/93 season notching 5 goals.

The summer of 1993 saw Mick Wadsworth become the manager and built his midfield around him as he played every game of the 1993/94 league season, scoring 9 goals and helping Carlisle to reach the play-off Semi-Final, before losing to the eventual winners Wycombe. Davey pushed striker David Reeves all the way for the honour of being top scorer for the season eventually finishing second to Reeves with a tally of 13 in all competitions. Carlisle supporters voted one of these goals, a 35-yard free-kick against Shrewsbury in May 1994, as their second best goal of all time.

His three year contract was coming to an end in the summer of1995 and there was no real sign of an agreement on either a new contract or an extension to the current one. In February 1995 Preston made a bid of £125,000 and Wadsworth agreed to let him move on after making 105 league appearances and scoring 18 goals.

Carlisle won the Division Three Championship in 1994/95 season and although Davey had already left the club he had played the minimum requirement of 26 games to qualify for a Championship medal.

Davey made his PNE debut in a 2-2 draw at Walsall on 28 February. He scored in his second game on his home debut against Doncaster. The score was also a 2-2 draw, the other scorer was David Beckham on his debut. Beckham asked Davey if he could have a go at a free-kick Davey was planning to take; Davey stepped aside and let him have it. In total Davey scored 3 goals in 13 matches in 1994/95.

The following season saw Preston win the Third Division Championship. Davey made 38 appearances, scoring 10 goals, including a brace in a 2-2 draw at Doncaster. He was named in the PFA Team of the Season in 1995.

The 1996/97 season saw Davey score another brace in a 3-2 defeat at Millwall and netted 6 goals in 37 appearances during the season.

In September 1997 Davey joined Darlington and made 11 loan appearances for the club.

Davey returned to Preston and made a further 18 league appearances, scoring two goals. He made his 100th league appearance at home to Wigan on 28 March. His last game was the final game of the 1997/98 season in a 2-1 victory at home to Bristol City. He had scored 21 goals in 106 appearances.

Davey's playing career was cut short at the age of 27 following a back injury while training with a medicine ball. However, Preston manager David Moyes gave him a chance at coaching with the club and within a short time Davey was in charge of Preston's Youth Academy, later moving to the Youth Academy at Barnsley. As part of his coaching education, he gained the UEFA C Licence, the UEFA B Licence, the UEFA A Licence and the UEFA Pro Licence in 2005 as well as the Academy Managers licence and the UEFA Youth Licence.

Davey was appointed caretaker manager of Barnsley in November 2006, following Andy Ritchie's dismissal. After a successful start he was given the job on a permanent basis at the end of the year, and later led the club to a successful fight against relegation at the end of the 2006/07 season. He later signed a four-year contract in December 2007 and saw the club make the national headlines with FA Cup victories over Liverpool and Chelsea in 2008 before losing to Cardiff in the FA Cup Semi-Final. Barnsley finished 18th in the Championship in 2007/08.

In July 2008 Davey was linked with a move to Manchester United as it was reported that he was on a list of candidates to replace United's assistant manager Carlos Queiroz.

The Tykes have made a disappointing start of the 2008/09 campaign as they currently occupy 23rd position after 8 matches.
