Player Profile John Curtis

John Charles Keyworth Curtis was born in Nuneaton on 3 September 1978. He began as a trainee with Manchester United and was a FA Youth Cup Winner in 1995.

Curtis made his debut on 14 October 1997 in a 2-0 defeat at Ipswich in the League Cup and made his league debut 11 days later as United beat Barnsley 7-0 at Old Trafford. Curtis found his opportunities limited and made his last appearance for United in a 3-0 League Cup defeat at Aston Villa on 13 October 1999. In total Curtis had made 13 league appearances for United.

On 19 November 1999 Curtis joined Championship side Barnsley on loan for the remainder of the season. He made his debut the following day in a 2-1 home win against Barnsley.

During the 1999/2000 season Curtis scored two goals and these are still his only league goals he has scored in his career. His first was a fourth minute goal at home to Manchester City on 11 March 2000 and his second was in a 2-2 draw at Port Vale on 15 April.

His solid performances helped Barnsley finish fourth to take them into the play-offs. Curtis played in the 2-1 home defeat against Birmingham but missed the 4-0 second leg victory at Birmingham.

Although Barnsley took the lead in the final at Wembley they were finally beaten 4-2 by Ipswich. Curtis was substituted in the final and was replaced by Mick Eaden.

This was to be his last appearance for Barnsley as Graham Souness signed him for Blackburn for £1.5m in June 2000. Whilst on loan Curtis had made 28 league appearances for Barnsley.

Curtis made his Blackburn debut in a 2-0 win at Ewood Park against Crystal Palace on 12 August. He played in all 46 Championship matches as Rovers finished runners up to Fulham.

The 2001/02 Premership campaign limited Curtis to just 10 league games for Blackburn as he was hampered by injuries. His 61 st and last league appearance for Blackburn was a 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa on 2 February 2003.

The following month Curtis joined Sheffield United on loan and made his Blades debut in a 4-1 win at Grimsby. He played in the 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford against Arsenal in the FA Cup Semi Final and helped his club finish third. Curtis made 12 league appearances losing only twice at Preston and Watford.

He played in both legs of the Play-Off Semi Final victory against Nottingham Forest. But again the Championship Play Off final ended in disappointment for Curtis as he played in the 3-0 defeat against Wolves in the Millennium Stadium.

After being released by Blackburn at the end of the 2002/03 season, Curtis joined Premiership Leicester. But after making his debut in a 2-2 draw against Southampton in August 2003 his stay only lasted 5 months and a further 14 appearances.

Following a 5-0 home defeat against Aston Villa on 31 January 2004 Curtis joined Portsmouth.

After his debut in a 4-3 defeat at Tottenham on 7 February he made a further 5 appearances in the 2003/04 season. Curtis made what turned out to be his last appearance for Portsmouth in a 2-1 defeat at Charlton in August 2004.

Curtis joined Preston on loan in September 2004 and made his debut in a 3-0 home win against Stoke on 11 September. He made a total of 12 appearances for Preston with his last game a 1-0 win at Cardiff on 19 November.

A permanent move fell though as Harry Redknapp was replaced by Velimir Zajec but he did not make an appearance for Portsmouth for his new manager.

On 3 February 2005 Curtis joined Nottingham Forest on a free transfer and made his debut 2 days later in a 0-0 draw against Rotherham. After signing a short term contract Curtis signed a 2 year deal. After being relegated in 2005 to League One, Curtis made 27 league appearances in 2005/06 and 41 appearances in 2006/07 as Forest reached the Play-Offs.

Curtis played in both legs of the Semi Final and made his final appearance in the 5-2 home defeat against Yeovil in the second leg. Following Nottingham Forest's failure to get promoted Curtis wasn't offered a new contract and joined Queens Park Rangers in June 2007.

He has currently made 4 league appearances for Q.P.R. but has yet to be on the winning side.

Cutis had represented England at schoolboy, Youth and 'B' international levels. He also had been capped 16 times by the England Under 21's.
