Kevin William Gallacher was born in Clydebank on 23 November 1966 and comes from a footballing family. His grandfather was the legendry forward Patsy Gallacher who played for Celtic from 1911 to 1924, whilst his uncle Tommy Gallacher was a defender with Dundee.

Gallacher was a Scottish schoolboy under 15 international and joined Dundee United as an apprentice in 1983 spending seven years at the club under the guidance of Jim McLean. Gallacher made his debut for the Tannadice Park Club in Switzerland in a UEFA Cup tie against Neuchatel Xamax in December 1985 and soon established himself with his fast penetrating wing play making 20 appearances and scoring 3 goals in the 1985/86 season.

The following season was the most profitable for Gallacher scoring 10 goals in 37 appearances

Gallacher appeared in two Scottish Cup finals and in the 1987 UEFA Cup Final. His most famous goal for Dundee United was also in a UEFA Cup tie against Barcelona, scoring the only goal in the first leg.

Gallacher had made 17 appearances scoring 1 goal in the 1989/90 season, but was no longer an automatic choice for Dundee United when Coventry City offered £950,000 to move south of the border on 21 January 1990. Gallacher had made 131 appearances for Dundee United scoring 27 goals.

Gallacher made his debut for the Sky Blues on 3 February 1990 in a 3-2 victory at home to Chelsea. In his first season for Coventry Gallacher made 15 appearances scoring 3 goals.

The following season was his most productive for Coventry scoring 11 goals in 32 appearances and made 33 appearances in 1991/92 season scoring 8 goals.

Gallacher was hampered by injuries during his time with Coventry and made 20 appearances during 1992/93 season before Kenny Dalglish paid £1.5m to transfer him to Blackburn on 22 March 1993 after making 100 league appearances for Coventry, scoring 28 goals.

Gallacher made his debut for Blackburn in a 4-1 victory at Ewood Park against Liverpool and scored 5 goals in 9 appearances at the end of the 1992/93 season.

During the 1993/94 league season Gallacher hade made 30 appearances scoring 7 goals when he suffered a triple leg fracture against Arsenal in February 1994.

In Blackburn's Premiership winning side of 1994/95 Gallacher only made one appearance scoring a crucial goal in a 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace.

Gallacher had tried to make a comeback after almost a year after the injury but his leg was back in plaster after it was broken again in the same spot.

After making 16 appearances during 1995/96 season he won a regular place in the starting line up in 1996/97 scoring his first hat-trick against Wimbledon. During the season he scored 10 goals in 34 appearances.

1996/97 saw his best season with Blackburn scoring 20 goals in all competitions (16 in the league including a hat-trick against Aston Villa). The following season saw Blackburn relegated from the Premiership as Gallacher scored 5 goals from his 16 appearances.

On 1 October 1999 saw Gallacher returned to the Premiership with a move to Newcastle for £700,000 and becoming Bobby Robson's first signing at the club. Gallacher had made 144 league appearances and scoring 46 goals for Blackburn.

Gallacher made his debut for Newcastle in a 2-1 home win against Middlesbrough on 3 October 1999. But injuries limited him to 39 appearances in 2 seasons, scoring 4 goals. His last match in the Premiership was a 3-0 home win against Aston Villa on 19 May 2001.

Gallacher signed for Preston on 17 August 2001 but persistent injury problems continued to haunt him. He made his debut as a substitute in a 1-1 draw at home to Walsall the following day. His only first eleven appearance was the following week in a 2-2 draw at Grimsby. Gallagher scored one goal for PNE, against Sheffield United in a 3-0 home win and his fifth and final appearance in a white shirt was on 3 November 2001 in a 6-0 thrashing of Stockport County.

On transfer deadline day Gallacher signed for Sheffield Wednesday for the remainder of the season. But he only made 4 substitute appearances before being released at the end of the 2001/02 season with eight other out-of-contract players.

In August 2002 Gallacher signed for Huddersfield and made seven appearances before hanging up his boots during the 2002/03 campaign.

Gallagher had won 53 caps for Scotland, scoring 9 goals and represented his Country at the Euro Championships in 1992 and 1996 as well as the World Cup in 1998 when he played against Morocco, Norway and Brazil. His debut for Scotland was a 0-0 draw against Colombia at Hampden Park in the Rous Cup on 17 May 1988. He captained his country once in 2-0 victory in San Marino in October 2000. His final match for Scotland was the return match against San Marino in March 2001.

Gallacher has received critical acclaim for his book, 'Tartan Turmoil“ the fall & rise of Scottish Football, a semi-autobiographical look at the problems faced by Scottish football.

Gallacher is now a radio and TV pundit in Scotland and for BBC Radio 5 Live.
