Player Profile - John Vaughan
John Vaughan was born in Isleworth on 26 June 1964. He came up through the youth ranks at West Ham although he didn't make a first team appearance at Upton Park. Whilst with the Hammers he was sent out on loan to gain experience starting with Charlton in March 1985, making six appearances. The 1985/86 season saw him loaned to another three clubs at firstly with Bristol Rovers in September 1985 with six appearances, the following month with Wrexham where he made four appearances and finally with Bristol City in March 1986 where he appeared twice.
In August 1986 Fulham paid £12,500 for Vaughan and spent seasons at Craven Cottage, making 44 league appearances. He was also in goal the night that Liverpool beat Fulham 10-0 in the League Cup. In January 1988 he joined Bristol City for a second time on loan with a further three appearances.
He was released from Fulham and was signed by Cambridge in June 1998 by manager Chris Turner. Following the arrival of John Beck he went onto enjoy success at United as they gained successive promotions from 1989-91 to take them to the old Second Division. He was an ever present in 1989/90 as they finished sixth, winning the play-offs and 43 appearances in 1990/91 as Cambridge won the Third Division. Vaughan made 33 appearances as they finished the 1991/92 seasons in the play-offs for the inaugural Premier League season but were beaten by Leicester.
During the following season Vaughan fell out of favour once Beck had been sacked and subsequent Cambridge managers Ian Atkins and Gary Johnson preferred Jon Sheffield or John Filan, Vaughan making 27 appearances as Cambridge was relegated from Division One.
Vaughan was released and joined Charlton in August 1993 where he made six appearances as back-up goalkeeper to Bob Bolder.
When John Beck became the manager of Preston had he took Vaughan with him in September 1994 and made his debut on 15 October in a 3-1 defeat at Hartlepool. Sharing the goalkeeping jersey with Barry Richardson Vaughan made 26 league appearances as Preston finished fifth before losing in the play-offs to Bury.
The 1995/96 season saw Vaughan make 40 league appearances as Gary Peter's side won the Third Division title. His last appearance was on the final day of the season on 4 May as Preston beat Exeter in front of 18,700 people.
Vaughan joined John Beck again in August 1996, this time with Lincoln making 66 appearances in four years.
Whilst with Lincoln he had two spells with Colchester on loan in February 1997 and November 1999 making a total of 11 appearances. Vaughan joined Chesterfield for a month's loan in January 2000, making three appearances his last game was his final appearance in the football league in a 2-1 defeat at Oxford on 19 February 2000.
Vaughan then moved into coaching on a part time basis in September 2003 with York before joining Macclesfield and Grimsby. After doing some part-time coaching in the academy, Vaughan was appointed as goalkeeping coach at Huddersfield in August 2006.
