Player Profile Russell Wilcox
Russell Wilcox was born in Hemsworth on 25 March 1964. He made his league debut as an apprentice for Doncaster in the last game of the promotion winning season of 1980/81. Doncaster drew 1-1 at Mansfield on 6 May 1981.
Wilcox failed to break through into the first team at Doncaster in the 1981/82 season due to injury. Wilcox was not retained and after a short spell at Cambridge joined Frickley where he was capped by England's semi professional team.
His performances was recognised by Northampton and joined in June 1986 for a fee of £15,000. Wilcox was part of the team which won the Fourth Division title in the 1986/87 season. Wilcox stayed at Northampton for four years and made 138 league appearances, scoring 9 goals. His last season for the club ended in relegation back to the Fourth Division.
In August 1990 Wilcox joined Second Division Hull for £120,000. Unfortunately Wilcox suffered his second relegation on the trot as in his first season Hull finished bottom of the Second Division. The 1992/93 season saw Hull narrowly avoid relegation from the Third Division as they finished one place and three points above relegated Preston. Wilcox had made exactly 100 league appearances for Hull, scoring 7 goals.
In July 1993 Wilcox returned to Doncaster for a second spell when he was transferred for a fee of £60,000. Wilcox quickly became club captain and won the supporters 'Player of the Year' award for both the 1993/94 and 1994/95 seasons. He was also recognised by his fellow professionals by his selection into the PFA Third Division team of 1994/95. Wilcox had made a further 81 appearances, scoring 6 goals when he transferred to Preston for £60,000 on 22 September 1995.
Wilcox made his Preston debut in a 2-2 draw against Fulham the following day. His only league goal for the Lilywhites was on his seventh appearance in a 2-1 win at a former club Northampton on 31 October. This was not his only goal as he scored an injury time winner in a 2-1 win against Carlisle in the FA Cup 11 days after his league goal.
Wilcox made 27 league appearances in his first season as Preston won the Third Division title and again was selected in the PFA Third Division team. Mid-table beckoned in the 1996/97 season for Preston as Wilcox made 35 appearances. His last appearance for the club was in the final game of the season as PNE beat Walsall 2-0 on 3 May 1997.
On 1 August 1997 Wilcox was signed by Brian Laws and joined Scunthorpe for £15,000. His debut was on 9 August 1997 in a 1-0 win at Peterborough . His first goal was in a 2-1 FA Cup victory against Scarborough on 15 November. Wilcox scored his first league goal a week later in a 4-2 win at Torquay. A second FA Cup goal was scored in the next round at Ilkeston and a further league goal at Hartlepool. In total Wilcox made 31 league appearances, scoring two league goals.
The 1998/99 season Wilcox played in the 1-0 Third Division Play Off Final victory against Leyton Orient making a total 28 appearances and 1 goal.
The following season saw Scunthorpe relegated from the Second Division with Wilcox playing in less than a third of the matches. The 1999/2000 season also saw Wilcox become player-assistant manager.
Wilcox took his total past 100 league appearance for Scunthorpe in the 2000/01 season when he appeared in 35 matches scoring 1 goal. The goal came in a 4-3 home win against Rotherham.
He made the last of his 118 league appearances in a 2-0 defeat at Southend on 23 February 2002 and had scored a total of 4 goals.
On retirement from the playing side Wilcox concentrated on his assistant manager's role full time. Following a boardroom battle Brian Laws was sacked in March 2006 and Wilcox was given the Caretakers Managers role from 25 March to 15 April. His first match was a 1-1 draw at home to Leyton Orient. In total he managed for four matches with two draws and two defeats.
Laws was re-instated and Wilcox returned to Assistant Manager. When Laws agreed to become the Manager of Sheffield Wednesday in November 2006, Wilcox followed and became Assistant Manager of the Owls, signing a contract until the end of the 2008/09 season.
