Player profile - Stan Davies

Stanley Charles Davies was born in Chirk on 24 March 1898. During World War One we played wartime football with Rochdale and had a trial with Manchester United.

He had also worked in the coal mines of his home town and was wounded at Cambrai. When he was discharged from Hospital he joined the Army Signalling School and was awarded with the Military Medal and the Belgium Croix de Guerre.

At the restart of Football League Competition in 1919/20, Davies joined First Division Preston and made his debut on the opening day of the season as PNE lost 4-0 at Blackburn on 30 august 1919. Two days later he made his home debut and scored the first PNE goal since the re-commencement of football although the Lilywhites lost 5-1 at home to Bradford City. During the season Davies scored 4 goals from 11 appearances.

The following season he netted 7 goals from 13 appearances including a brace in a 2-0 win at Oldham on 4 December. His last appearance was on New Years Day in a 3-0 defeat at home to Burnley.

Davies joined First division Everton for a fee of £4,000 and scored an hat-trick on the opening day of the 1921/22 season as Everton beat Manchester United 5-0.

After scoring 9 goals from 20 appearances for Everton Davies joined First Division West Brom and were top scorer for the Baggies in his first season scoring 14 goals from 25 appearances. The 1922/23 saw him score the most goals in a season with 20 from 37 appearances, 6 more than Fred Morris.

The 1923/24 season Davies scored 7 goals from 21 appearances but was limited to just 5 appearances in 1924/25 and scoring twice as West Brom finished two points behind Champions Huddersfield.

The 1926/27 he was top scorer again for West Brom with 19 goals from 26 appearances, scoring two more goals than Charlie Wilson. The following season he was joint top scorer with Wilson on 15 goals. After 77 goals from 147 appearances Davies joined Birmingham.

He only stayed for one season scoring twice from 14 appearances in 1927/28. The following season Davies joined Cardiff and was made player manager and scored two goals from 13 appearances.

In 1929/30 he was made player manager at Rotherham making one appearance and made one appearances for Barnsley in 1930/31.

He later joined Manchester Central from the Lancashire Combination before being re-instated as an amateur in 1933 where he played for Dudley Town.
