Player Profile – Norman Robson
Norman Robson was born in 1908 in Ryton-on-Wyre. The centre-forward started his career at Preston and made his debut for the Second Division club in a 2-0 defeat at Port Vale on 28 March 1927. In his second match he scored a brace in his home debut in a 4-0 win over Swansea on 2 April. He scored a total of 5 goals in 9 appearances during the 1926/27 campaign.
The 1927/28 season saw Robson have his most successful season with 19 goals from just 22 league appearances. He started with a brace in a 3-2 victory at Wolves on 10 September. His next goals came in the return fixture with a hat-trick in a 5-4 victory on 21 January. Robson then scored a brace in his next match as PNE beat South Shields 7-2 on 4 February. A week later a further brace was scored in a 4-2 victory at Leeds. Robson then scored three braces in consecutive matches in victories over West Brom, Bristol City and Reading as PNE scored 14 goals in these matches.
Robson was limited to just 9 matches in 1928/29 and netted 5 goals, including a hat-trick in the 7-0 demolition of Reading on 27 August. His last Preston match was a 2-0 FA Cup Third Round defeat at Portsmouth on 11 January 1930. He has scored 30 goals in just 41 league appearances for the Lilywhites.
For the 1930/31 season Robson joined First Division Derby, his debut was a 1-1 draw at home against Blackburn on Boxing Day. His first goal came on his third appearance and his next home match with a 4-1 win over Bolton on 7 March. His other goal that season came in a 6-1 win over Manchester United.
The following season he scored a brace on his second appearance with a 5-1 home win over Bolton on 28 November. His last match was a 4-4 draw against Wolves on 10 December 1932. He had scored 6 goals in 35 league matches for the Rams.
Robson joined Second Division Bradford City and scored on debut in a 3-0 home win over Charlton on 18 March 1933. His next goal came in his third match and his next home game with a 2-2 draw against Grimsby on 1 April. His third and final goal came in a 1-1 home draw against Lincoln on 18 April. He made 10 league appearances during the season and a further 10 league matches in 1933/34. Robson scored a brace in a 2-1 home win over Brentford on 24 March. Robson scored on his last league appearance with a 1-1 home draw against Manchester United on 7 April 1934. Robson had scored 9 goals in 20 appearances for Bradford.
