Player Profile – Sandy Doolan
Alexander (Sandy) Doolan was born in Tarbolton, Scotland on 7 August 1889.
The full-back started his career in Scotland with Annbank, Kilmarnock and a loan spell with Beith. Doolan joined Bradford City from Kilmarnock in 1912. He made two appearances in 1912/13 with a 0-0 draw on his debut at home against The Wednesday on 30 November and then a 3-2 home defeat to Derby a fortnight later.
Doolan had to wait until the 1919/20 season for his next appearance, his first match of the new season was another home draw against The Wednesday with a 1-1 draw on Christmas Day.
Doolan had to wait until his sixth match of the season for his first win with a 2-0 home victory over non-league Portsmouth on 17 January 1920. His fist league win came in his next match a week later with a 3-1 home victory over Chelsea.
Doolan was on the winning side seven times in 22 league matches including his final match with a 2-1 home win over Burnley on 1 May. He played in four FA Cup ties, winning three including a 3-0 win at Deepdale on 21 February.
It was Preston who he joined for the 1920/21 season and started with the number two shirt. His debut was a 0-0 draw at Middlesbrough on 30 August and was remembered for a last minute goal line clearance. His first victory came on his third appearance a week later with a 2-0 home win over the same opposition.
After 20 appearances at right back he swapped to left back and the number three shirt. His first match in his new position was a 3-3 draw at home to Bradford Park Avenue on 25 March. Doolan then won the next five matches and made a total of 31 league appearances in both full back positions.
The 1921/22 season Doolan continued at left back making 30 league appearances plus a further 8 in the FA Cup including the 1-0 defeat against Huddersfield in the FA Cup Final at Stamford Bridge on 29 April.
Doolan made 77 appearances for the Lilywhites his last match was a 3-2 home defeat to Birmingham on 3 March.
