Player Profile: Jack Jennings
John (Jack) Jennings was born in Platt Bridge on 27 August 1902. He started his career with Wigan Borough in the 1923/24 season, making 11 appearances for the Division Three North side and made his debut in the 1-0 win over New Brighton on 5 January 1924. The following season he scored his first league goal in a 3-1 homw win over Grimsby on 20 December 1924. After making 47 league appearances for Wigan, Jennings joined First Division Cardiff.
His first season for the club in 1925/26 saw him make just two appearances at right-half, his debut was a 3-2 defeat at Birmingham on 10 October 1925. Due to the number of international defenders the Bluebirds had such as Fred Keener from Wales, Billy Hardy from Ireland and Scotland’s Jimmy Nelson, he continued to struggle to get into the side and made just 5 appearances in 1926/27.
He had more opportunities in 1926/27 as Jennings made 19 appearances as Cardiff finished sixth in Division One as represented the Football Association in their tour of Canada.
He was an ever-present in 1927/28, playing in all 42 league games but he could not help the club avoid relegation even though they conceded just 59 goals which was the lowest in the whole division, three less than champions The Wednesday.
His last season for Cardiff was in 1928/29 when they finished eighth in Division Two. In total he made 94 appearances for Cardiff but never scored a league goal.
A triple transfer with Joe Hillier and Freddie Warren saw them join Middlesbrough, Jennings scoring once in 16 appearances in 1929/30. This was a penalty on his third appearance in a 2-1 defeat at home to Everton on 22 February 1930. The 1930/31 season saw Jennings as an ever-present as Boro’ finished seventh in Division One. Jennings scored three penalties including two in a 5-1 home victory over Blackpool on 17 January 1931.
Jennings was limited to just 18 appearances and one goal in 1931/32, but doubled the number of appearances in 1932/33, scoring once again.
In 1933/34 he netted three times in 39 appearances all penalties, and the following season saw him score for the sixth successive season, as he made 35 appearances.
Appearances after that were limited, making just a further 9 appearances before his transfer to Preston in September 1936 In total Jennings has scored 10 goals in 195 appearances for Middlesborough, many of these as captain.
He made his debut for the Lilywhites in a 3-1 home win over Manchester United on 26 September and continued in the number three position in the next 15 matches. His only goal for Preston came from the penalty spot in a 1-1 draw at home to Portsmouth on 19 December, the day he was stand-in captain. He made a further three league appearances for PNE to take his tally to 19, the last of these was a 1-0 defeat at Birmingham on 27 March 1937, Preston finishing fourteenth in Division Two that season.
The 1937/38 season Jennings joined Third Division North side Bradford City and made 28 appearances for the club. His debut was a 4-0 defeat at Doncaster on 28 August 1937. His first win came on his third appearance in a 3-1 home win over Rochdale on 4 September 1937. His final league appearance was a 1-1 draw at home to Gateshead on 25 April 1938.
On retiring from the game he joined Northamptonshire County Cricket Club as their masseur and coached the England amateur international side.
Jack Jennings passed away in 1997.
