Rhys Philip Elliott Murphy was born in Shoreham-by-Sea on 6 November 1990
Murphy started as an academy player at Wimbledon before joining Arsenal. He broke into the Arsenal Reserves team as a schoolboy while also scoring 17 goals in 21 games for the Arsenal Academy.
He joined Brentford on loan for three months on 24 November 2009. His league debut on the same day saw a 1-0 defeat at Wycombe. He made 5 appearances for the Bees but only stated in the first team once on his last appearance in a 1-1 draw at home to Charlton on 28 December. But he was substituted at the end on the first half.
In August 2011, Murphy had a trial with Scottish Premier League champions Rangers and played for their reserve team. In January 2012, he had a trial with Hibernian but at the end of that month he signed for Preston on loan until the end of the season.
His debut was on 14 February in a 1-0 win over Hartlepool. Similar to his time with Brentford he made 5 league appearances but started only once on his fourth appearance in a 3-0 defeat at Colchester on 3 March when he was replaced by Ian Hume on 58 minutes. His final match came in a 3-1 home defeat against former club Brentford on 27 March 2012.
On May 22, 2012, Murphy was released by Arsenal along with Jeffrey Monakana who signed for the Lilywhites.
Murphy joined Dutch Eerste divisie side Telstar on 9 June 2012, signing a one year deal with an option for a second. He scored his first goal for his new club on his debut in a pre-season friendly against Hartlepool on 15 July 2012. He made his official debut on 10 August 2012 in the home match against Helmond Sport and lost 1-2. In the 67th minute he was substituted for Resida who scored three minutes after.
His first league goal came in a 1-0 at home to SBV Excelsior on 24 August 2012.
Murphy has played for the England under 16 and 17 teams and was part of the 2009 UEFA Under 19 Championships.
Before playing for England, Murphy represented the Republic of Ireland at under-15 level and after an approach he switched his allegiance back to the country of his grandfather. He was called up to the under 21 squad in August 2011, and made his debut on 1 September 2011 against Hungary in Sligo scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory.
