Player Profile – Rabbi Howell
Raby (Rabbi) Howell was born on 12 October 1869 in a gypsy caravan in Wincobank, Sheffield.
He began his career with the Sheffield club Ecclesfield and also played for Rotherham Swifts before signing, with three other Swifts players, for Second Division Sheffield United in March 1890. Eventhough he was only 5ft 5in Howell started at the club as a centre forward and then centre half. However in his second full season at the club he moved to wing half and when the club joined the Football League in 1892.
Howell won two England International caps and was notable as the first, and probably only, full-blooded gypsy to play for England. His first games was whilst he was with the Blades on 9 March 1895 which saw England beat Ireland 9-0 with Howell scoring England's fifth goal in the 36th minute of the match. He had to wait a further four years for his second and last cap.
He won promotion with the Blades from Division Two in 1892/93 and in 1897-98, a Championship medal after finishing Division One runners-up in 1896/97. He played for 5 years in the football league with United, making 155 League appearances for the club with 6 goals. His overall total for the Blades was 240 appearances and 11 goals.
However his departure from the club was, and still is mired in controversy. During the five years at the Club, he was often in trouble for “off the field activities” In the match against Sunderland on 5 March 1898 Howell scored two own goals in a 3-1 away defeat. Concerns were raised that by the club over participation in some form of corrupt practice. He was left out of the challenge match against Celtic and the Dewar Shield match against the Corinthians.
He played in the next match on 26 March against West Brom in which the Blades lost 2 - 0, with Howell having another poor game. The rumours and no doubt the invective that Howell received led to him in April 1898 being transferred to Liverpool FC for a fee of £200, with Howell making his debut for the club in a game against Aston Villa. This was the last game of the season on 8 April 1898 and resulted in a 4-0 win for Liverpool. Liverpool finished championship runners-up a year later with Howell missing only four of their 34 games.
However by the time Liverpool landed their first title in 1901 Howell had lost his regular place in the team, his last appearance was a 3-1 home win on New Years Day and that summer he moved on to Preston. In all, he made 59 league appearances for Liverpool.
Howell made his debut on the opening day of the 1901/02 season in the Lilywhites first ever Division Two match with a 3-1 defeat at West Brom on 7 September. He made 26 league appearances during the season which his only goals coming in an 8-0 home win on 28 December.
A further 30 appearances were made in 1902/03, but disaster struck on his 60th league appearance when he broke his leg playing in a 2-0 home win against Burnley after just five minutes on 26 September 1903. A collection was immediately taken at the ground and raised over £24 and never played again.
He had a benefit match against Liverpool on 30 September 1904, after retiring from the game he ran a fruit and veg shop and died in 1937, aged 68.
