Player profile – John Drummond

John Drummond was a winger who was born in Edinburgh and started his career with Partick Thistle.

Drummond joined Preston in the summer of 1890 and scored on debut in a 3-0 home win over West race in a 6-0 home victory over Derby on 20 December. His last appearance was a 3-0 FA Cup defeat to Stoke on 17 January 1891.

Drummond joined Sheffield United who were a non-league club playing in the Midlands Counties League before joining the Northern League for 1891/92.

His played in the first League match for the Blades in a 4-2 home win over Lincoln on 3 September 1892. His first goal came on his eighth appearance in a 10-0 win at Burslem Port Vale on 10 December. Drummond scored 6 goals from 20 appearances as the Blades finished runners-up and were promoted to the First Division after a ‘test match’. Drummond scored the only goal against Accrington in the ‘test match’ on 22 April.

He played in the clubs debut in the First Division as Sheffield United won 3-2 at Everton on 3 September. Drummond scored 3 goals from 20 appearances, his last and 40th appearance came in a 3-0 defeat at former club Preston on 7 April.

For the 1894/95 season Drummond joined Liverpool, his debut was a 1-1 draw against Blackburn. Drummond made 14 appearances for Liverpool in his only season with the club. His last match was a 1-0 defeat against Bury in a ‘test match’ on 27 April.

His only goal for Liverpool came in a 4-0 FA Cup replay victory over Barnsley St.Peters on 11 February 1895. After leaving Liverpool it was Barnsley St.Peters who Drummond joined.
