Player Profile - John Cunningham
John Cunningham was born in Glasgow in 1873.
The Inside-Forward signed for Burnley on 1 November 1889 but didn’t make a league appearance for the club.
On 1 September 1893 Cunningham joined Preston and made his Lilywhite debut at his former club Burnley as PNE lost 4-1 on 9 September 1893. His first goal came on his seventh appearance with a 3-2 victory at Everton on 28 October and made 16 in total during the season.
The 1894/95 campaign saw Cunningham net 5 goals in 12 matches including a brace against Burnley with a 4-0 win on 26 January 1895.
Another brace came the following season as PNE beat Aston Villa 4-3 on 7 December 1895. His final Preston match was a 1-0 home defeat against The Wednesday on 2 January 1897. He had scored 8 league goals in 51 league matches.
Cunningham joined Sheffield United on 1 May 1897 and made his debut with a 5-2 home win over Blackburn on 4 October. Five days later Cunningham scored on his second appearance as the Blades won 5-2 at Bury. He scored a brace in a 2-1 win at Aston Villa on 18 January 1898. His last appearance for Sheffield United was a 2-0 home win over WBA on 11 April. This was his most successful season in front of goals with 7 goals from 24 matches.
On 1 July 1898 Cunningham joined Aston Villa, but his stay only lasted three months and didn’t make an appearance for Villa.
He joined Newton Heath and made his debut with a 3-2 victory over Grimsby on 5 November 1898, his last match was the return match at Grimsby with a 3-0 defeat. Cunningham scored 3 goals in victories over New Brighton, Blackpool and Glossop in 15 league appearances.
John Cunningham died in 1910.
