 Player Profile – Sandy Brown

Sandy Brown was born in Beith on 7 April 1879. He was a prolific scorer in Scottish youth football, and was given a nickname of the "Glenbuck Goalgetter" as a 15 year old playing for Glenbuck Athletic

He turned professional with St.Bernards before joining Preston in the summer of 1896. He made his Lilywhite debut in a 0-0 draw at Bury on 5 September 1896. His first goal came a week later on his home debut as PNE beat Sunderland 5-3. In his next home game PNE won 5-3 again, with Brown scoring a brace against Burnley. Preston finished fourth that season and netted 7 goals from 20 appearances.

Brown finished top scorer with 11 goals from 20 appearances in 1897/98, helped by scoring in each of his last five games of the season culmating in a brace in the last game in a 5-0 win over Derby.

In his final season with the club Brown scored 7 from 23 appearances, his last game was a 1-0 home defeat to Bolton on 29 April 1899.

Brown joined southern League side Portsmouth and bagged 34 of the 110 goals Pompey scored in 1899/1900; this included a hat-trick against Q.P.R. The following season he joined Tottenham

During the 1900/01season, Brown scored 15 goals during Tottenham's  F.A.Cup run, including a goal in every round, which resulted in the club becoming the only non-league team to win the Cup. Brown scored both of Tottenham's goals in the first Final against Sheffield United, a 2–2 draw; in the replayed match Brown scored another as Spurs beat the Blades 3–1 to win the Cup.

In total, during his brief spell at Tottenham, Brown scored 45 goals in just 57 games. In May 1901 Brown has another  spell back at Portsmouth, scoring 31 goals before a transfer to Middlesbrough.

Boro finished tenth in Division One in 1903/04 and fifteenth in 1904/05. During those two seasons Brown scored 15 goals from 44 appearances.

It was with Middlesborough that Brown won his only Scottish Cap in their 1-0 defeat to England in 1904. He had been selected to play against England two years earlier but the match was subsequently declared void due to the Ibrox disaster.

Brown left for Kettering before returning to Scotland with first Nithsdale Wanderers then Ayr United.
