Player Profile - John Friar

John Friar was born in Newmains, North Lanarkshire on 22 July 1911. Friar who was a right winger started his career in Scotland with Carluke Rovers and Hibernian. Friar moved south in 1929 with Bradford City but didn't make an appearance.

The 1932/33 season saw Friar score on his debut for Portsmouth which turned out to be his only league appearance for the club.

The following season saw Friar join Bournemouth and scored 11 goals in 34 appearances but the club needed to apply for re-election of Division Three South.

The 1934/35 season saw Friar join Second Division Port Vale and score 10 goals in 18 appearances and was their leading scorer until he joined Preston in exchange for Ted Critchley and a cash balance. Friar scored on his debut in a 3-3 draw at Leeds on 15 December 1934 and scored 5 goals in his first 6 appearances including a brace in the 2-2 draw at home to Everton on 5 January 1935. The goals dried up in the New Year but scored 8 goals in 23 appearances.

Friar played in the first three matches of the 1935/36 season, but after the 5-0 home defeat to Middlesbrough on 7 September, Friar joined Norwich.

Friar found his appearances limited for Norwich in the first two seasons scoring twice in 12 appearances in 1935/36 and three goals from 13 appearances in 1936/37. The 1937/38 season saw Friar reached double figures with 10 goals in 34 appearances.

His last season for Norwich was in the 1938/39 season when Friar netted three goals in 23 appearances, but could not help the club to avoid relegation on goal difference from Division Two.

Friar joined neighbours Ipswich for the 1939/40 season but the league programme was abandoned after three league games following the declaration of war.

Friar passed away in 1979.
