Christopher Stephen "Chris" Sulley was born on 3 December 1959 in Camberwell. He started his career with Chelsea but failed to make a senior appearance at Chelsea under Danny Blanchflower or Geoff Hurst and suffered relegation from Division One in 1978/79.

He moved on to Fourth Division side Bournemouth in March 1981. Sulley made his debut as a substitute in a 3-3 draw at home to Darlington on 14 March 1980. His full debut came a week later in a 1-1 draw at Mansfield. In total he made 8 appearances during the season for the Cherries.

In his first full season for the Cherries David Webb’s side won promotion to the Third Division after occupying the final promotion place in 1981/82. In 1986/87 Bournemouth won 19 of their 23 league games at Dean Court and became Third Division champions. Sulley was an ever-present during the season.

He was an ever-present in the 1982/83 campaign and scored his first goal in a 2-2 draw at home to Doncaster on 2 May.

For the third season running he was an ever-present again in 1983/84, scoring twice. A 3-2 defeat at Oxford on 25 February and a 3-2 victory over Orient on 24 April was the matches he scored in.

For the following two seasons Sulley made a further 60 appearances. After making over 206 league appearances for Bournemouth, netting 3 goals he moved to Scotland to join Dundee United. 1986. His last match for Bournemouth was a 3-0 win at Wolves on 12 April 1986.

He featured only 8 times for manager Jim McLean at Dundee United, including one appearance at the very beginning of the club's UEFA Cup run to the final.

Sulley returned to England within three months with Blackburn for £15,000 after a loan spell.

He won the Full Members Cup at Wembley in 1987 against Charlton with the only goal scored by ex PNE player Colin Hendry.

He played in play-off matches for three seasons on the trot with Blackburn, but lost to former club Chelseas in 1987/88, and in the final against Crystal Palace 1988/89. The third successive play-off appearance in1989/90 Rovers lost to Swindon.

Bankrolled by Jack Walker, new manager Kenny Dalglish finally took Rovers into the top-flight via the play-offs with victory over Leicester 1–0 in the final. In his six years with Blackburn, Sulley made134 league appearances and three goals.

Sulley moved to John Rudge’s Port Vale in July 1992, and played 53 games in league and cup in 1992/93, though he missed both the League Trophy finals at Wembley.

Sulley joined Preston on a free transfer in June 1993 and made his debut in a 2-0 home defeat to Crewe on 14 August. His only PNE goal came in a 3-1 win at Deepdale against Torquay on 12 March 1994. But there was one last play-off disappointment as the Lilywhites lost 4– 2at Wembley. He made 21 league appearances for the club.

After retiring in 1994, Sulley took up a coaching post with Preston at their Centre of Excellence in 1995. From there, he moved back to Blackburn and then Bolton originally as under-19s coach. In March 2008 he left his position at Bolton after over eight years at the helm.
