Paul Darren Masefield was born on 21 October 1970 in Litchfield, He started his career in the youth ranks at Southampton but signed his first professional contract with Birmingham in July 1989 and in spite of being with the club for a number of years, he never made a first team appearance.
Masefield moved to non-league Cheltenham before joining Exeter on a non-contract basis in February 1992, but only made one appearance for the club.
He returned to non-league football for a short time with Bromsgrove Rovers before joining Stockport in August 1992 and made seven appearances in six months.
In February 1993 Masefield joined Doncaster and made nine appearances for the club as Doncaster finished sixteenth in Division Three.
For the 1993/94 season Masefield joined Preston in August and made his debut in the number two shirt in a 4-3 win at Scarborough on 21 August. Masefield made six appearances for the Lilywhites but following the signing of Andy Fensome the right back played his final game in a 4-1 win at home to Chesterfield on 9 October 1993.
He finished off his playing days with brief spells at Bromsgrove and Limerick with the latter spell as a player-coach between September and November 1994.
He then moved to Hong Kong, where he played for the Sing Tao Sports Club, as well as for a Hong Kong league All-Star team. He finished off his career by playing professional football in Singapore with clubs such as Jurong, Balestier and Tanjong Pager United.
Masefield owns a company that runs a coaching school for children; he has coached Singapore Cricket Club in the second tier of Singaporean football. He is also a pundit on the ESPN Star Sports coverage of the English Premier League.
